uni dissatertations?

i know i know...:o but this person has done worse things and the genral thought is, if they can pass uni, they'll be in better posistion to make up for they're other misstakes, if not im scared they'll fall into more depression etc.

I know you care but you aren't really helping them.
You are bailing them out and they are not learning to take responsibility for their actions or their life.

Not doing things for themselves is not going to give them any LESS depression.

You are not really helping, even when you think you are.

The only way to get out a bad patch is to help yourself. And take all the knocks that come with that.

Maybe if we gave a shit about other people's crapness, they wouldn't think it was ok to cheeat.
I do give a shit mate, don't get me wrong and seriously I don't think people think it's ok to cheat, they just do it regardless because they can, the guilt subsides and they learn to live with it.

But I see your point Rutita1, there's only such much of other peoples' stuff you can worry about.

:)

Exactly, as long as you are doing things the way you think/know you should etc. I know it's annoying, but they are the losers really.

Your friend has to learn how to help themself.

Why not help them work out what they need to do to get through uni? If they need an extension, getting one on the grounds of ill health shouldn't be a problem if they're already seeing a doctor.

They should see their tutor and explain the situation as well, make them aware of the problem.

Unis are generally very compassionate once they know someone is having difficulties.

Who said cheating is fine? Not me, so put your sarcastic rolling eyes back in your patronising little head.:hmm:

I've accepted the fact that people cheat and get by without doing the work themselves because regardless of what I think they will still do it. It's nothing new by the way it goes on in all walks of life and has done forever.

I wrote my own dissertation, wouldn't have dreamed of cheating or getting someone else to do it for me. But I am me. Having a fit about other people's crapness is a distraction I can do without.:)

*sigh* But by not bringing people up on it when it occurs you're condoning cheating... And the more people who get away with it, the more people will do it...

Totally. I like to be able to sleep at night with a clear conscience. Besides, what goes around comes around.

Agreed.

One of my priorities in life is to get through with a clean conscience. That means standing up against stuff I think is wrong, as well.

EG I joined some lecturers the other day on a march against some crazy forced redundancy thing my university is trying.

Dear jaed,

Please read my posts on this thread before telling me what I think and what I do.

I do not condone cheating by accepting it happens, I am being realistic and acknowledge that people do, whether or not I agree with it.

My comment to keithy, was that she should not waste her energy getting mad about it. She should continue to put her energy into doing the best she can do for herself. Good for her!

My responses to Lost zoot have been completely different, they think are helping a friend.

If the friend posted on this thread, I would respond to them accordingly.

Yours blah blah blah

Up to you but if I knew someone was cheating at something I wouldn't sit back and accept it. I'd be bring them up on it, and letting people know.

I have been researching and slowly writing and rewriting mine for almost a year now.
A year? Bleedin ell - is that normal for undergrads nowadays? I got off very lightly with mine I think: at 6-7000 words, it seemed more like an essay in which you didn't have to worry about rambling too much and going over the word count. And the basic solution to my dissertation problem came to me in a dream! Got the whole thing done in a couple of weeks (and I'm usually an painfully slow, methodical writer).

This MA dissertation's gonna be a lot tougher, but still only got a few months to write it in.

As for getting your dissertation written by someone else... well, it seems like a cop-out and I wouldn't do it myself, but I don't know the circumstances and can't be arsed to argue. I just wanted to talk about dissertations for a minute :)

I don't know this person though.
Lost Zoot is the 'helper' not the student.

If I knew the person I would tell them I thought it was wrong, but would still have to accept that they make they own decisions and not have kittens about it and waste my energy getting mad.

I don't think it's fair to accuse rutita of condoning cheating, when all that's been said is it's not worth wasting energy worrying about other people being losers!

No no, a year is not usual. I am just a bit of a special case.

:o

I taught myself to read Spanish over the last summer to be able to do it.

It doesn't just make me mad to think that somebody else could get somebody else to do it, but that they would. I am so interested in what I am writing, and proud of what I have written so far. Its incomprehensible to me that somebody would do this.

I find it really bloody annoying too. I put a hell of a lot of work into my (not very complicated) dissertation and I was proud when I'd finished it because I'd done the very best piece of work I could. That someone just pays another person to write it is terrible and it insults every other fucker that puts in the hard work to do it.

And, iirc, a Drs appt is not really going to cut it. You're meant to have been working on it for months....

Depends on the uni and the course. For example, I've heard some awful things about UCL. Not giving extensions when someone's mother died for example.:(

As for Lost Zoot writing his friend's dissertation, people are right, it's not actually helping your friend take responsibility for their own life. If they are depressed then hopefully the university will take this on board (unless they go to UCL!)
