Underrated, Little Seen Horror Films

"Dead and Buried" was a great horror flick, I remember seeing at the local cinema as a nipper (sneaked in through the fire escape, if memory serves)

Saw it a couple of years back on TV, and wasn't quite as good as I remember, but maybe that was because many of the tricks and elements have been used so often in susequent horror movies. The visual effects and gore were certainly shocking at the time.

It's shite! Nasty piece of shit

 controversial!

Orang, what with this, football, sport and music in pubs, and big brother.. you're getting a bit Meldrew! ;)

Sliver was shite btw.

Yes, and Supiria is imo underrated and not seen as widely as it deserves to be! In some ways dated, but it still works on the level of atmosphere with impressive use of both colour and sound and of mystery. It also has some impressive nasty endings that are a cut above the rest!

I suppose as a horror film geek and as one who is particularely into Italian exploitation films from the 70's I'm too used to it's standing as a classic. I agree with you that it is an absolutely gorgeous film and can never be seen by enough people. :)

I agree with Orang Utan, The Devil's Rejects is a repellent film in the way it glorifies it's sub-Mansion clan of sadistic killers while showing absolutely no sympathy or compassion for the victims. I'm still in shock that it is Rob Zombie of all people who is doing the Halloween remake.

Not at all - I've always felt that way - you just never noticed!
Yeah, Sliver was shit, just another excuse to expose Sharon Stone's tired old muff once again. Slither, on the other hand is a decent horror film that ticks all the boxes required to make an entertaining B movie.

I agree but a number of films mentioned are not all that obscure either. :)

It's all relative though isn't it :) I reckon the more time one spends on this forum, the more one's definition of obscure gets more and more well, obscure. :D

Haha, apologies for the error, I of course meant Slither.. :D

Now there's a surprise.. ;) ah Reno, we're just not destined to agree are we?

...talking of Cronenberg and probably not that little seen, but I watched The Brood again recently which I still think is among his very best films.

'Killer klowns from outta space' - my favourite movie as young whipper snapper...used to scare the shit out of me.

...and 'twisted nightmare' some slash movie with awful acting and mullets...fucking ace!

'The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue' springs to mind for me. My favourite zombie flick though the English dub may grate on some.

I watched that again recently and it wasn't half as fun as I remembered it being as a kid.

I still laughed at the interchange between the clown on the little kids bike and the 'big mean biker dude', where the clown literally "knocked his block off".

Title so evocative I had to look it up. Looks great! Plus lots of it filmed in the Peaks just up the road from me in God's Own County

Is this (and films like it) available for download anywhere does anybody know?

Fucking yes, lots of people mentioning In The Mouth of Madness!!

'Tis a real bitch that the R2 version of it has been discontinued, keep meaning to pick up an import of it

EDIT: Note the tagline ;)

Dunno, but it's out on DVD here. If you like ...Manchester Morgue one also check out another Spanish zombie classic, Tombs of the Blind Dead and the Italian zombie films by Lucio Fulci, especially The Beyond.

Can the Story of Ricky be considered a horror film?

What about all those sick japanese ones.

The Guinea Pig Films - The Devil's Experiment etc

Only if watching a person getting slowly hacked to pieces over an hour is your thing. I saw one of them and found it in turns boring, amateurish and disgusting. Not entertaining or "underrated".

We watched A Bucket of Blood by Roger Corman the other day and it's well worth a watch. Not traditional horror maybe, but a good funny spoof, a bit camp imo and a nice twisted storyline.

Demonoid is great for horror lovers - loads of great movies from buffs uploaded daily (many full DVD releases for those with good speeds).

:)

Their not really my thing either, but I do think there is a place for them in the world of horror films. They are true video nasties.

Like a cross between Canibal Holocaust and the bit in Clive Barkers Forbidden where the guy is skinned alive.

Is Dario Argento's version of Phantom of the Opera any good? :)

Anyone seen the Masters of Horror series? Was watching a disc of volume one last night, a episode by John Carpenter calle Cigerette Burns. Excellent stuff!

Great these are, and essential for any horror fan.

All hour long horror films by known horror directors.

Great one with all the dead soldiers returning from Iraq and reanimating as zombies to vote against the present government, then dying again - don't have to look to far for the political message there.
Think it was by Joe Dante, but i could be wrong.

All torrentable...

Just remembered two of the great "video nasty" era ones - Cannibal Holocaust and The New York Ripper.

I know Cannibal Holocaust is available on dvd, not sure about New York Ripper (which is more of a very violent thriller now i think about it)

I have a soft spot for Bloodsucking Freaks as well, for pure nasty bizzareness.

Cool, the Dante one is in the volume my mate lent me! That Cigarette Burns one was so good, a welcome return to form for John Carpenter.
