Underrated footballers

Laurent Robert wasn't that good, he was world class if he could be arsed but he was a right lazy twat

People always laugh when I say Peter Beagrie should have been given a go for England. I think he got 1 "B" cap. When every man and his dog were being tried unsuccessfully on the England left wing, he was quietly going about his business taking the piss out of right backs all over the country. Liked him when he was at Everton and Man City and could not believe it when Bradford signed him! Over the moon to use a football phrase!

Pavel Nedved. He's been at the very top for over ten years now, and is proven at internatioonal level and in Serie A. He seems a very adaptable and flexible player, and can fit in most parts of the midfield.

Also Paulo Maldini. Largely recognised as the greatest left back of all time, but will get unfairly ignored when considering "best players of the last 20 years" simply because he's a non-goal scoring defender. I'm not sure the back four of Tassotti-Costacurta-Baresi-Maldini will ever be beaten.

Both of them are amazing players, but they have been consistently playing at two of the best clubs in Europe for years as well as being automatic choices for their national sides and Maldini is still first choice for milan despite being about 40 so I wouldn't really call them underrated

I guess my point in that if you were to a public poll of best player of the 90s, the likes of Romario, Baggio, Zidane, Stoichkov, Figo, Raul, etc would dominate, whereas I believe they all come up short against Maldini. It's a more general observation of the lack of kudos given great defenders in comparison with their attacking team-mates/opposition.

Nedved is also consistently excellent, but not necessarily of the party-tricks style and so doesn't get the media exposure of a Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, etc.

Maldini is just fucking amazing, he's still probably in the top 5 left backs playing, where are you Lizarazu? Where are you Leonardo? :D

He was great, but he was in a succession of shite teams and then there was the moped-through-a-window thing. As Everton have been mentioned, one should point out the king of underrated footballers of the last fifteen years, Joe Parkinson.

How about the Brazilian World cup winners of 1958 and 1962, apart from Pele and perhaps Garrincha? You never hear much about Djalma Santos, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zito or Vava,, and Zagallo mainly gets mentioned for his managerial nous.

Great 90s players who have been forgotten

Matt Le Tissier
Robert Lee
Nick Barmby
Fabrizio Ravanelli
Lee Sharpe
Andrei Kanchelskis
Ibrahim Ba
Barry Venison
Attilo Lombardo
Trevor Sinclair
Gary Speed

Le Tissier is probably my favourite non-Blackpool player ever. He was so good it was ridiculous, there is this montage of his amazing goals on youtube and it's like 10 minutes long cos he scored a supreme amount of dipping volleys from 35 yards out with his back to goal... Amazing player.

Are you sure Barry Venison GREAT!!!!!!!!!?????????

Definitely agree about Nobby.

He's also an absolutely phenomenal set-piece taker. I remember reading one of those Opta stat thingys back in his heyday which revealed that, based on goals scored directly or indirectly, he was the most successful corner and free-kick taker in the league. He was some distance ahead of a certain Mr D. Beckham.

Yeah, it was nice have someone briefly at west ham who could score from a free kick

eh?

I alway thought he was hugly overatted angry long haired cunt who only got publisity because he was a dirty cunt he never got booked....

No, he was a superb combative midfielder who's talents was lost amonst all the vitriol.

On a Leicester tip, Emile Heskey has always been vastly underrated by idiots with little understanding of the game.

Agree with the Heskey comment, brilliant (well maybe not quite) player for Liverpool....

I like Heskey too. That said, when he first appeared for Leicester, it looked as if he was going to be truly quality, and he's never quite lived up to that.

I think he was hugely underrated. I know loads of fans hated him but i think he must have been a nightmare to play against. Not cos he was dirty but cos he worked so hard for his team covered so much ground and made so many succesful tackles.

A man like Capello wouldn't pick him for england otherwise!

he just couldn't score in a brothel

but what he does for the team is class, defensively and that
