Under-rated Actors/Actresses

Johnny Depp.

From starting out in A Nightmare on Elm St, through Platoon, Edwards Scissorhands, Benny and Joon, Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Sweeny Todd and of course the Pirates of the Caribbean, he certainly isnt afraid at trying differetn roles.

And what has he won? pchah

1 Golden Globe this year for Sweeney Todd.

*thats* underrated...

I don't count 'underrated' in terms of oscars/ggs though. Depp is very highly rated.

FUck the oscar tossers.

Congo is the Showgirls of adventure films, which means it's rather entertaining exactly because it is so terrible. Laura Linney is the only one who emerged from the whole mess with her dignity intact, but the dialogue, gorilla costumes, paper mache volcanoes and the scenery chewing by the likes of Tim Curry are pretty awful....in a fun way.

"Amy bad gorilla !"

OK, deep breath... Charlotte Coleman.

One of my favourite actresses ever, and one of the few people that I didn't know whose death made me genuinely upset.

This might be because I loved her kids TV shows, then loved Oranges, and Four Weddings was partly filmed in my hometown - plus I also have asthma; a certain amount of self-identification going on there!

She actually came up in conversation in the pub this evening, funnily enough (talking about book-to-screen adaptations; on my MA, I wrote an essay about varying approaches to authorship, as exemplified by the extremes of Jeanette Winterson and Anthony Burgess; it was called 'A Clockwork Orange is Not the Only Fruit.

If she'd lived longer, she probably wouldn't have been under-rated.

It's nice to see that someone whose posts I rate highly also likes an actress I rate highly :)

He was great in To Catch A Killer. Very creepy indeed.

And oh yes. Scary bastard. Much more convincing than most. Hope his kids haven't watched his movies too much!

Michael Ironside was also mentioned earlier, and he is fantastic; I just always keep reading his name as that detective in a wheelchair.

Oh, and has anyone seen the comedian Lee Evans in the film Freeze Frame ? He really is quite superb in that.

Weird one I know, but Diana ross in "Lady sings the blues" was absolutely incredible.

Her Billie Holiday was an adequate performance, but I recently showed Mahogany (a film that does for fashion design and modelling what Showgirls did for strippers) to a friend of mine and we were helpless with laughter at Diana Ross' awful performance. She's almost as bad in The Wiz and her brief acting career makes Madonna look like Meryl Streep.

Rewatching Buffy, I keep being astounded by how accomplished an actress Sarah Michelle Geller is. Yet I've never heard anyone else (other than my GF) comment on it.

Another pair of surprisingly good actresses were the Julies in Bad Girls (I was made to watch it), and Dot in Eastenders.

Is there anyone else you think isn't lauded as they should be?

Sorry - this is un-lauded, multi-millionaire, see her picture everywhere, star of series franchised across the globe Sarah Michelle Geller?

You are right - she just doesn't get the attention.

You just fancy her. Not got a problem with that.

Pauly Shore
Steve Guttenberg
Bobcat Goldthwait
Fisher Stevens
Dana Carvey
- they all could haved had the career of Tom Hanks has they had the right agent and made the right choices

She's successful, of course, but not one I see mentioned as a great actress, which is what I was talking about.

I don't fancy her, though - I like Darla and Faith. :)

She has been very typecast as Buffy, and as great a series as it was it isn't the type of series that gets taken very seriously. There are two scenes in particular where she absolutely stands out as an actor. In the 2nd series after Angel turns bad and she is sobbing in her bedroom. And in the 7th series where she has the shit kicked out of her by the uber vampire and everyone is feeling defeated and she makes the speech about the First swallowing her whole and choking on her. It makes the hairs stand on end.

I'd also say, and I'm preparing to take shit for saying it, Richard Fleeshman who played Craig Harris on Coronation St is an amazing actor. There were times when he really stood out on that show, not hard I know. But he is very talented.

Stringer Bell/Idris Elba- The Wire

Apart from sounding like he makes ginger beer for a living, the man can act.
He's the guy from UltraViolet! The vampire show which only lasted a season.

Sam Kydd

'Aye Aye Sir' (as engine room man in 'In Which We Serve' just before diving overboard the - SPOILER - sinking ship
'Where to now ma'am' (as the taxi driver in 'The Killing Of Sister George')

and many, many other classic roles

Heh - I remember that.

Didn't realise it was Stringer in it!

A few that I think are under-rated:

Ed Harris
Ray Liotta
Kevin Bacon
Laura Linney
Matthew Broderick
Christian Bale
Toni Collette
Robert Downey Jr.
Gary Oldman

Heaps more ............
