UN Hypocrisy Reaches New Heights...

Gradnma: "If Rachamim does not like the Mods, why does he post?": What a ridiculous question. What would my feelings about Mods, whatever they may be, have to do with my deciding to post? Moderation is one thing, Forum content and interest is another. As to exactly my reasons for posting, I have declared them quite often, once about 2 days ago.

I am asked it quite often though and not always by antagonistic people such as yourself, so I will repeat it here:

I post for a couple of reasons. One is, my religion instructs me to in a manner of speaking. The Talmud, Jewish Oral Law, says that "To save one man is to save the world." It also tells us that ignorance is worse than death and I help to fight ignorance, as well as saving myself from it by expanding my own horizons. Who would wish to post in a forum where all people think alike? For that I would restrict myself to Jewish Task Force or the IDF's official board.

Furthermore, most Jews would never think of confronting non-Jews or ignorant Jews (not saying the 2 are equal as if to insult non-Jews mind you). People should remember that most of the New Testament was written by Jews, and the axiom "Do not cast pearls amongst swine" is an old Jewish proverb, albeit coopted by Chritsitanity via its inclusion in the NT.

The problem with the attitude though, is that ignorance has often led to genocide. Why have Jews had a long history of persecution? Because Jews usually do not complain to non-Jews. They do not bother to interact with non-Jews beyond a a fringe dynamic and when they encounter ignorance fron non-Jews they do not say a word.

Finally, HASBARA. Surely Grandma (and many others) have heard me discussing this Hebrew word. It means "Truth Telling" and is , as I just recently said, considered a civic virture in Israel. After years of ignoring critics the Israeli Govt. has decided that it should engage the world more and not allow it to make up its mind mostly from Arab propaganda.

Is it clear then? Hope so.

"Grandma is getting fed up with Rachamim's bleating (sic) and complaints of bias.": So what? Until you are appointed Moderator, put up or shut up as they say. If you have a right to denigrate and curse at will I surely have a right to post my political views. Life is grand, yes?

Dyaln: "So, is Rachamim saying that the only real reason UNIFIL was deployed was for profit ?": Difficult to say. I would imagine that there was real sentiment behind it by SOME within the UN but the sad fact is, at the time of its creation it was already abuundantly clear that such a force would be utterly useless. 40 odd militant organisations?

As you said, one one hand it is easy to deal with violations by Israel, but not so clear when the other side incurs violations. You also have to remember SC Res # 1559. 1559 called for disarming of all militant organisations in Lebanon and their dissolution. Implentation was never even planned and so SC Res# 1701 was a ridiculous move. All the more so when it basically was just a rehashing of SC Res#1300.

For those that do not know, 1701 is the 2006 Resolution that brought an end to the 2006 Lebanon War between Israel, Hezbollah, and AMAL. Its major point was the Israeli pullout of Southern Lebanon and the Lebanese Army redeploying in each area as it was evacuated (by Israel). 1300 was the 2000 Resolution that's main point was EXACTLY the same. 1300 was never implemtned outside of Israel pulling out 3 months ahead of scheudale. The Lebanese Army never even tried to deploy. It would not go near Hezbollah, et al.

The main thing one should realise is that simply in their existence these militant groups are contravening International Law. Then you see ridiculous actions like the press conference at the heart of my original post for this thread, blaming Israel for gathering Intel that the UN refuses to even think about. The UN calls for disarming and dissolving Hezbollah, as well as the cessation of all arms smuggling into Southern Lebanon (a secondary point in 1701) but then UNIFIL refuses to interdict smugglers, pretends no arms are even in the region, and then to boot faults Israel for documenting this smuggling!

So, yes, mostly I have to conclude it is about profit for the UN. Certainly those involved with UNIFIL and the 2 other UN military organisations in Lebanon have built entire careers around these operations (remembering that UNIFIL was created in 1978). To draw an unlikely analogy, it is like the Drug War in the US. It employs many tens of thousands of people and so it remains the status quo despite it being totally counter-intuitive.

Nino: Thanks for the word count! Now I can sleep easier!

Fruitloop: "Urban is one of various sites where Rachamim turns up...": Actually, I rarely have time for any other site, even BL is only once every few days. Soon might have to cut back here as well. Awwwwww, I know it saddens you but Real Life does exist.

For the record, I have always made it a popint to tell people NOT to believe ANYTHING I say. My only desire is that they take what I say and research it and then learn the truth on their own. I actually do no tell lies (I am not infallible certainly but I have yet to have anyone prove me a liar, although Grandma believes my failure to oblige HIM with sources for easily had information constitutes one and the same).

Dexter: Aside from the usual insults I have to take note of your "1942 Auschwitz" jibe as being particularly tasteless. You have the audcity to call a person a troll while making a comment LIKE THAT? Funny, here is a thread I have iniated on a perfectly valid subject and youronly appearance was to insult me in the most vile and despicable way one might imagine (against a Jewish poster) and yet I am the "troll?" So typical, so sad, and so Dexter.

"Grandma is getting fed up with Rachamim's bleating (sic) and complaints of bias.": So what? Until you are appointed Moderator, put up or shut up as they say.

...and the flip side of the coin is-until you are made board moderator put up or shut up.

If you have a right to denigrate and curse at will I surely have a right to post my political views. Life is grand, yes?

Pray tell me how criticism of moderator decisions is 'political'?

So what exactly is the point of UNFIL then?
the IDF see them as best pointless as worse another target when they get bored with shooting at hezbollah.
Hezbollah ignore them or use them for cover.

Grandma:"How is criticism of Mods 'political'?": I was referring to the bulk of my posts, almost all of which you vehemently disagree with.

Likesfish:" What is the point of UNIFIL?": EXACTLY! It has no point. I posted this thread and then just a few days ago Hezbollah downed a Lebanese Army copter. Someone on a Jewish website in Hebrew opined that "perhaps it was one of those 'hunting rifles' that the UNIFIL Chief was going on about" hahaha. So true. They are utter fools and tools.
