The UN don't have any troops, NATO (and the EU) do and they have planning capabilities as well. Of course, if they went, they would have a UN mandate

they wouldn't need a UN mandate, Israel and Lebanon as soveriegn nations can invite whoever the hell they like onto their own territory, however a NATO/EU force (same thing really in terms of assets, planning, C3I and ROE) with a UN mandate makes it look good for those who give a shit about the veiws of butchers and dictators around the world.

only a European or US/Canadian force has the military capability to subdue Hezbollah and enforce the will of the Lebanese Govt in the south, the septics can't do it for obvious political reasons, the UK is hideously overstretched so it should be an opportunity for the much heralded EU battlegroups to deploy.

the Germans will quietly send 3,000 troops, the French will loudly send 3,000 and the Irish will save the world from barbarism (apparently) with a logistics platoon.
