Ultimate 80's collection: Sci-Fi, Horror and Horror-Fi!

I think that's waaaaaaaaaaaaay too "family friendly, watch it on christmas day afternoon while the mince pies are still being digested' for Groke's list.

Next we may as well suggest Flight of the Navigator and Explorers!

Actually the first half of Explorers is one of the finest 45-50 minutes of kids' cinema. Shame the bit where they actually meet the aliens sucks.

I can't remember if Fright Night was any good, but I keep thinking of it when reading this thread.

I think it isn't that good, but it is "not good" in exactly the right way in order to qualify for inclusion in this thread.

Oh, by the way: In case you all missed it, anyone with an interest in this thread should go here
and download this fabulous MP3 mix as discovered and offered up by Orang Utan in response to my other 80's movie related thread.

Fine, but what's your view on 'Explorers'?

Do you concur that, if that had made the bit where they meet the aliens as excellent as the first hour or so, it would have been one of the best films of the 80s?

Is that any good? I inherited a VHS copy of it but have never got round to watching it

basically this guy is so good at this arcade game that these aliens come and get him to be a spacepilot for them

I thought the best bad guys quote off Cobra was "It's the way of the new world". That film was soooo cheesy and OTT.

Giles..

i love the way it has everything. the scene where about 100 guys on motorbikes chase him and he kills them all standing on the back of a truck, and then runs into an orchard.....

and the fact that his car is a shitebucket:D

I remember watching this as a kid. I then spent all my pocket money and all of Saturday mornings playing Defender in my local arcade, but I guess I must have never made the grade. No offers to join the Galactic Space Force were forthcoming. Ah, well.....

Giles..

Re:last comment
At least you wer'nt digitized by the Bishop of Battle....
(I think that was a episode from a Creepshow type horror anthology, but am not sure which one...).
Grimley's nominations....
Blade Runner (director's cut)
Time Bandits
Brazil
Android
Demons
Rock & Rule
Akira
The Empire Strikes Back

I've thought of the ultimate overlooked film for your list:

Demon Seed. Film about a house which is all controlled by a super computer, and how it comes alive and goes mental. Fucking great stuff.

Can't believe I didn't think of it before. Better than a lot of stuff mentioned on the thread.

Coming out at the end of the 80's "yuppy nightmare" cycle of films (After Hours, Something Wild) Miracle Mile flopped when it came out and then quickly disappeared, to later aquire minor cult status on VHS. I suppose it was a tough sell as it's difficult to describe in one sentence what it's about without giving the game away. I like how it seemingly starts as a romantic comedy and then becomes more dark and apocalyptic as it moves along. I love the ending and the dialogue between the last exchange between the two main characters.

Society
Phantasm 2 (Most over looked horror series ever)
Demons (Someone else already posted it but its so good)
Zombie FLesh Eaters (although that might be 70's)

Sad reading back through this thread :(

Also mystified as to why I didn't mention Something Is Out There in my previous posts. If anyone finds a copy, let me know - I'd even be willing to pop my downloading cherry to see that again!

Indeed it is.

Incidentally, does Tron count for this?
