Ultimate 80's collection: Sci-Fi, Horror and Horror-Fi!

The Groke

hot hail/Paging Dr. Beat
I randomly bought The Terminator: Ultimate Edition today - cost me a fiver.

Superbly remastered with excellent picture, and DTS 5:1 - perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon with a few G&T's

Got me thinking - I love this kind of stuff!

I love that uniquely early 80's look and style, the stylised violence, the relentless synth-soundtrack, the clothes, the hair, the dialogue, the ubiquitous 80's "club-scene" etc.

Now of course I own:

Robocop
Bladerunner
Aliens
Shining (that is 80's not 70;s right?)
Day of the Dead
Terminator and
Evil Dead II amongst others whose titles escape recollection at the moment.

I am keen to get my hands on the Hellraiser box set and the Predator special edition (Oh look - Arnie again!) in the immediate future.

So please let me know - what are the best of the best of the rest in this genre?

I am sure there is lots of obscure stuff I have missed, and probably plenty of obvious stuff I have missed too, as I have offered up a pretty small sample list in a pretty far-reaching genre.

I won't apologise for any scrappy posting or glaring omissions as I am quite, quite drunk.

Help me Urban!

Give me your selection for the ultimate 80's Horror, Sci-Fi and Horror-Fi DVD collection!

Oh, and the bit when Arnie cuts his damaged eye out and reveals the iconic Terminator red-eye: Best animatronic model ever.

I forgot! (how could I) I have The Thing already - ultra

Scanners! Good choice.

Weird Science doesn't count I am afraid.

:(

The others.....Not seen!

I will have to check them out.

Oh - two I forgot initially: American Werewolf, and of course the Nightmare On Elm Street series - I do have the box set........Only really worth it for the first two and the last one I suppose....and i thin the last 2 were 90's anyway.

Does Total Recall qualify, or is that a bit later?

90's isn't it?

Gremlins?

Hmm - borderline.

It is more of a comedy, and lacks the violence quotient I am seeking.

That said, it is good.

Miracle Mile (this one especially ticks all the boxes, but you'll have to get the R1)
The Hitcher
Strange Invaders
The Blob
Near Dark
Re-Animator (only the uncut US version will do)
Mad Max 2
The Quiet Earth
The Howling
The Seventh Sign
Cat People
The Exorcist III
Alligator
An American Werewolf in London
Aliens
The Fly
Dead Zone
Dressed to Kill
Lady In White (a period piece and maybe not what you are looking for, but a great little film nonetheless)

That's a cool list Reno. The Hitcher - that's a film I've been meaning to see for yonks.
\

Me too!

I keep seeing the special edition version on the shelves here in Dubai and never quite getting around to buying it.

The Fly?

Glaring omission from my OP - I do own both of them on DVD.

Re-Animator is one that has been on my peripheral for ages but I have never got around to it.

It was actually 95.

But I reckon you could sneak it into such a collection. It's a very, very cool horror film.

I dunno - that is really stretching my criteria.

1979 I can accept (oh! doesn't that mean that Alien creeps in there?) and 1990 too.

Anything beyond this does not count.

Was assault on precinct 13 count? Cool synth soundtrackand the slightly naff bad guys.

edit: nah, that was 75/76 wasn't it? Will try again in a minute

the running man
hellraiser
freddy
creepshow
death machines
mad max 2
It
repo man

not sci fi or horror but Stallone-Cobra is another beauty

Prince of Darkness was deffo 80s. TBH, any John Carpenter should count, although I think that's already been mentioned :)

Reno's pretty much covered what I was about to say, and also made me really happy that at last I know there is someone else out there who saw Miracle Mile...once seen, never forgotten.

What's it about?

Demonoid's description:

A young man meets and falls in love with a young woman at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. This area is known as Miracle Mile, and the whole movie takes place there. They make a date, which he misses, and while he is searching for her, he accidentally finds out that we (the United States) are about to start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. He frantically searches for her so that they can escape Los Angeles.
