I could never really relate to them. The seemed permanently trapped in some kind of 1950s protestant Dundonianness that I could never understand. I remember one 'oor wullie' railing against the new fad of rubber soled shoes. Also, the Broons only ever had one storyline.

There was quite a lively discussion on here regarding Ulster Scots , mainly focusing on dialect. An article posted on origins of people who speak that dialect - and deafening silence....

we had a Scottish drinker who may have spoke ulster Scots or just had a really thick accent most of the time he was unintelligible.
favorite trick was to swear at coppers and staff safe in the knowledge none us could understand him
came a cropper twice new agency staff who'd been working in Glasgow when he tried the technique launched into a similar tirade he retreated cowed muttering ladies shouldn't use such language
didn't learn though CID turned up mob handed to extradite or what ever they call it when they take somebody back to jockland Sandy tried it on again and had to off scotlands give us good as they got while everybody English stood around looking bemused
