UK redeployment from Iraq to Afghanistan

Death and injury go with the job - if it's going to happen there's nothing you can do about it so why worry? I could step out of my house tomorrow and get hit by a bus, should I never leave the house? What if I fell down the stairs though? I could break my neck.

The british public is supposed to get a lump in the throat and blow a mental bugle everytime one of you gets offed (or maimed/crippled etc) by those uppity natives. Cos your supposed to be doing it for the glory of tone and country - not the (dubious) perks.

So are you proud be building a noble kleptocracy in Iraq and Afghanistan or are you just a mercenary?

BTW - I knew a couple of people who were in GW1 and it severely fucked them up - all the free board and skiing freebies dont help if you cant sleep at night for screaming. So I feel I need to challenge your breezy bravado.

I dont personally wish you any harm in your little imperialist jaunt - but what if I greet news of your death or injury with a 'occupational hazzard for tony's troopers' style shrug of the shoulders?

I'm proud of what I did in Iraq, I did my job under fire and proved I was fucking good at it. I'm proud of what most of the Army have done there, since the good things we've done for the country have begun to improve life for the Iraqis. I'm not proud of the way it's been run, but that's politicians, not soldiers that have done most of that.

I've had plenty of nightmares myself since I got back from there, I saw things you really don't want to know about and I'll never forget them. That doesn't mean I'm going so sit and worry about dying or getting injured - you'd crack up if you did. Do fire fighters sit and worry about burning to death, or miners about pit falls? No, for the same reason as we don't worry about getting shot - it probably won't happen anyway, and if it's going to you probably can't do anything about it anyway so there's no point worrying about it.

Should you hear about me dying/getting wounded (and it's statistically very unlikely you will) and just think of it as 'occupational hazard' then I wouldn't be surprised, I wouldn't expect a stranger to be all that bothered.

Well I hope you come back in one piece, enough people have already died for this bullshit without adding more grieving relatives to the list of people having lost sons and daughters. As a human being I cant think of anything less Id rather do than fight for a bunch of power hungry cowards who feed our parents children to the war machine. Still, maybe one day you'll change your mind and find something more productive to do with your time.......
