Ugly Betty

Bettys camp brother mentioned Prada this week, in reference to the importance of 'The Book'. I guess they must realise what a complete rip one is to the other.

Chicken and egg all over again :D

Great way to make kids with braces and glasses feel crap about themselves isn't it?

:(

But that's part of the joke, no?

Because she's not actually ugly.. what struck me was she was the funkiest person on the magazine...

I often think of Anna when I am trying not to kill my own Prada wearing boss

I guess I'm lucky. My boss wears hawaian shirts, khakis, and Birkinstocks. I rarely have the urge to harm him, he's so laid back.

Anyone still watching this?

I started off thinking it was crap, but since the passing of the 'The OC' it's officially my televisual guilty pleasure of choice.

I'm still watching it on Fridays -- seems to have been going on forever! Without spoiling the ending, how much longer does it have to run? :)

As with all american drama series probably until no one watches it anymore, and thus will never have a proper end.

Apart from The OC where the final episode fast-forwarded through the next 5 years of everyone's lives resolving every remaining loose-end. Despite the fact that no-one watched it anymore (except me  )

I heard the original Columbian show she was an economist who fell on hard times? (Not that I've seen it)

Typical of the USA to dumb down the complexity of that type of scenario which would allow in subtle subtexts.

Enjoyed the show for what it was.

What on EARTH are you talking about? UB is an Americanised remake of one of Colombia's most popular telenovelas - pulpy, produced by the bucket load set storyline dramas - basically story limited soap operas. Their Eastenders FFS!

I *heart* Ugly Betty, and have the hots for ModeGirl Amanda...she floats my boat...

not quite an economist - "I did six semesters of Finance in the San Marino University"

The main point being that these shows aren't high brow art, they're mass popular entertainment, generally poorly acted etc. The reason UB got noticed is because the size of the US Hispanic population and the consequent ratings that made the US networks take notice of South American produced products.

Telenovelas tend to follow a standard pattern, similar to the worst excesses of US soaps (stuff like Alex/Alexis is kitten chow for some of this stuff - they go all out on the missing evil twin scenario for example), but they are as deeply loved as Enders and Corrie...

I *heart* Amanda and covet her wardrobe (although hotpants, corset, shirt and tie might get a few raised eyebrows in my office)

Looking at IMDB we're coming up to (this Friday) Ep 17 of 23, with a new series to follow at some stage.
