Ugly Betty

that was really, really poor. i was actually quite looking forward to it, but it's just lame, predictable toss :(

There were a few giggles in it, but the only thing that REALLY made it worth the effort was the few seconds-worth of clip of Salma Hayek in a maid outfit. :)

shit! I spotted SH was an executive producer (ie - Hollywood name attached to project to attract extra funding) but missed her actually appearing! May have to bloody well watch again now.

It wasn't bad for a first episode, totally predictable, but that's what first episodes tend to be. Now we've got the premise hopefully they can shake it up a bit.

I assume that Devil Wears Prada was a rip-off of the same originial series rather than this coming in off the back of DWP, outrageously similar.

Aye, i think she's quite pretty, and i certainly would!

I wonder if the Fashion Industry likes it, seeing as is portrays them as all arseholes

Yeah right ...like no one knew that already.

Thats not my point at all.

I'm not saying it was a well kept secret, but people do like having fun poked at them as a group sometimes - the 80's rich builders loved Loadsamoney for example, even though it was a character to show up how horrible they were

I liked her, but thought the show was very unoriginal - same as any other 'slag off the fashion industry and expose how bitchy, pretentious and empty they all are'. I mean - so? Haven't we established this? I also think they should have been brave enough to use a person who is actually bloody ugly - although US TV couldn't quite cope with that, could it? That said, I'll probably watch a few more to see if it picks up. It wasn't dreadful, it just wasn't - well, anything much, really.

Only saw the last ten minutes. Pretty dull and predictable. Why couldent they have taken it a bit more seriously. If some one makes a sincere little monologe about how they will now buckle down,, work hard and impress the boss then walk into a door: thats funny. If you can tell by the way they make the speech that they will walk into a door (or similer) it aint nearly as funny.

you couldn't really get any liter than Prada already was...
Pah!

I will wait to see if anyone in Ugly Betty out bitches the super bitch that was Miranda Priestly

Bet they cant :D

I'm just waiting for the inevitable betty make over, and then they'll all be "oh wow, you're so cool"

I think betty is very cute as she is

exactly.. it just doesn't seem to even have the courage to stick to its own premise. Be curious to see the original star. Different markets (who've remade it rather than just buying in the US version as we've done) have accentuated different notions of 'ugliness' according to cultural norms...

Managed about 6 minutes of it before switching off.

The fucking awful noise of many annoying screechy whining American females and hyperactive effeminate males, discussing fashion, is simply not permitted in my house.

did you not realise that it was going to be like that before you switched it on? :D
yeah course he did he was hopeing that it would inform him to this seaons milsey collection i'll bet he was well bummed out... :D

I've watched up to episode 8 and it's worth sticking with. The story stops being so shallow and you actually end up liking the characters a bit more.

I *heart* Betty so much. If she was real I would so want her as my friend.

My son kept asking: 'Why is she called ugly Betty, she's not ugly?' :D
:D

She's not ugly at all. She's a very attractive girl with braces and bushy eyebrows.

I didn't think it was particularly funny, but was quite amusing. I'll probably watch it if I'm not going out.

They'll like it because it's set in their world but it's not about them, oh no. Rather like Nathan Barley.

I read an article in the paper the other week. Haven't seen DWP - shall I not bother now I've seen 2 eps of UB? :D

I enjoyed it, me and madamv got free tickets from heat magazine. Meryl Streep was fantastic and Anne Hathaway is lovely. It's much bitchier and harsher than UB and the clothes and bags are to die for. I would watch it again just for that.

I heard the original Columbian show she was an economist who fell on hard times? (Not that I've seen it)

Typical of the USA to dumb down the complexity of that type of scenario which would allow in subtle subtexts.

Enjoyed the show for what it was.

There also been a German version. The last couple of times I was in Germany there were posters up for it everywhere:

Great way to make kids with braces and glasses feel crap about themselves isn't it?
