Half of em really can't guard, not tucking chins in etc etc.

But you are talking about a boxing guard - in MMA your hands need to be in a position to defend not only punches (as in boxing) but also grabs, kicks, knees, and take downs. Also, the smaller gloves allow for punches to get through easier so a higher guard is less effective.

The reality is that a fight between the best MMA fighter and best boxer would be quite dull. The MMA fighter would issue leg kicks (staying out of punching range) until the boxer fell over - once on his back the boxers specialised skills would be negated and he would be at the mercy of his opponent - there is no safety on floor that boxers are used to!

To be fair though, you guys are expecting that a boxer would naturally fight by the Marquis of Queensbury rules in a different kind of event. Which, judging from some of the pub brawls I've seen, simply ain't going to be the case.

All professional ringside events are slightly contrived and hidebound by rules in some way. The idea of an 'ultimate champion' is a bit of a nonsense all round, especially when tv and sponsorship considerations enter the fore.

And from a spectator perspective, boxing still provides way better entertainment than some no-names clutching each other and sporadically breaking out in very occasional flurries of kicks, elbows and punches. There's sustained aggression, a shape to the violence and a fairer points system for a start

Well I guess that just boils down to personal taste....

I have seen some superb boxing matches, that have provided a great spectacle.

I have also seen plenty which are an utter snooze-fest, with two cagey opponents plodding round the ring and occasionally having a quick cuddle.

IME, if I watch a Pride or UFC event, the chances of seeing a display which I will appreciate and enjoy are far greater than if I were to watch a boxing event.

Horses for courses though innit.
