UCATT warning on Olympics

mm, I dont think that that is the case at all. Even the dumber poster (eg baldwin) would not say that, but would realise that migrant workers are in a position where they are far easier to be exploited by the unscrupulous than 'native uk' workers are.

From a Czech community support police officer "The gangmasters from Eastern Europe go to the cities in the Czech Republic and get homeless people from the streets and offer them a roof over their heads and a decent job if they come to the UK," he said.

Ricky Tomlinson and others did time for beating up scabs during the fight against the lump.

Ricky Tomlinson was not imprisoned for that - he was imprisoned for pro Trade union activities, and them subsequently released due to the pressure created by mass working class marches.

You're right that they stitched him up on other charges but there was a fair bit of beating up scabs going on. Not that I have a problem with that.

Police are warning that the 2012 Olympic project is likely to be targeted by criminal gangs who traffic illegal immigrants as cheap labour.

Specialist officers from the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (Soca), Britain's equivalent of the FBI, have visited some of the UK's biggest contractors, who are bidding for the Olympic contract, to discuss how eastern European organised gangs could exploit the huge demand for labour over the next six years.

Equally they're in a position, as I said above, where migrants have a clear temptation to play the tax system to their own advantage. I don't suppose many here will take a terribly moral line on that :D but the upshot could be that they make more than their British counterpart, who can't evade tax quite so easily. So they're paid 10% less but end up with 10% more. Win win for them and the company they contract to. Losers are the British workers.

As it wouldn't be legal to discrimiate against foreign self employed workers but not British ones, it makes sense that the union leadership wants no s/e workers at all.

it would be perfectly legal to so discriminate if the workers were hired in their country of origin - not that that makes a difference to your general point.
