Ubuntu?

I've just told aptitude to install Edgy Eft (whatever an Eft is, but at least it's "edgy" ) so I fully expect to be offline for the next few days as I figure out how badly it's fucked my main computer :D

Why...? Isn't it still in beta...?

WINE is a fantastic bit of of software. It's not strictly an emulator, but it is a complete translator for the Win32 API calls so that all your software thinks it's running on windows when the code is actually being executed against your linux kernel. It's not quite as optimised as the Microsoft API though so it loses a lot of processor power in the overheads, but if you've got a reasonably beefy CPU then you should be laughing. You'll need to use it for all of your windows programmes that don't offer a special linux version (although to be fair there's probably a perfectly adequate open source alternative out there for you to use natively :D)

If you don't know much about a linux then probably agood idea to get the Crossover Office version... You have to pay for it but it allows you pop in an Office install CD and go...

It's broken my computer :(

As for why? Why not! It's all a laugh, and there were several packages I wanted to install that needed stuff from the edgy repository so I though bollocks, I'll take the leap. It's supposed to be on general release in October so it's not as if it's going to be *horribly* buggy. Except I've got no X at the moment :p :p

Might try an install from fresh rather than a dist-upgrade. We'll see what happens.

Is there no Live CD yet...? Thats why I tend to shy away from installing beta-operating systems...!

The ubuntu live cd never worked on my computer anyway, I had to install server first, get that on the internet and then install a desktop on top of that.
