U75's favourite dessert

Cid said:
Gateaux Negresse (yes I do know that means cake of the black woman, it's a pretty old recipe) - It's a very dense chocolate cake made with ground almonds as well as the usual cakey ingredients. Makes it have a thick, slightly gritty texture - very rich, very decadent. Best served with raspberries and home made caramel ice-cream (which I'll post up a recipe for in a bit).

If anyone doubts its english credentials, it's in the Constance Spry cookbook, which is about as English as is humanly possible.

Never heard of it so despite it's authenticity, it's hardly well established :p

PS: Have just tried googling a picture of it - zilch

This is a rubbish thread.

Which numpty put Banoffee Pie, as unpleasant and sickly a 1970's 'innovation' as technicolour flock wallpaper and Farah hopsack slacks, as the first choice eh? Established my arse - it's some Johnny come-here-lately dessert nonsense, ill-thought out by some backward taste-free yokel in Sussex somewhere, probably when listening to the Bee Gees in his and brown Morris Marina.

And the thread starter wants to control which desserts can be featured on this humble thread? The bloody cheek eh, especially when they've put goddamm Pecan Pie on there as well. For gawd's sake, Angel Delight, Vienetta and Fab lollies would all have more integrity than that Yank interloper. And no sorbet on list either - the king of all refreshing desserts.

I declare this thread a disgrace and shambles. Desserts deserve better.

  ;)

Lemon Tarts :)
Chocolate moose :)
Rice Pudding :)

Dunno why none of the above appear to have been mentioned. Syrup sponge/treacle pudding is another of my faves, and apple crumble and cherry pie (washed down with a damn fine coffee) ;)

Damn fucking right!

I don't see blackberry and apple crumble anywhere? Where's the Toffee pudding - the mainstay of traditional Lake district puds?

This thread is a god-damned travesty!

Ok I suppose rhubarb/apple crumble is almost worthy of blackberry/apple, but still!

And no fools (other than human ones) either! Raspberry fool is god's gift to England! What about gooseberry based recipes? Gooseberry fool, or gooseberry pie?

Yes, I did wonder how many people would notice I stuck Pecan Pie in ;) Just did that for a laugh. No way is it going in as it's American

Listen you miserable lot.

How can I have ALL your dishes in a poll huh? The nominated dishes would take up half your screen and I'd probably get a bollocking for doing a huge thread.

That's why some have to be eliminated :p

I may decide to eliminate anything that doesn't sound English - including Banoffi/Tiramisu etc. except I don't know where half of them come from :p

Well Black Forest gateaux is German and it's a sponge cake anyway so in all honesty could be thrown into that category. Bannoffi/bannoffee was allegedly created by the Hungry Monk pub in 1972 but was later remarketed as an American pie.

Well I know about Blackforest Gateau, didn't know about Banoffee though.

Maybe we should have a separate thread for foreign ones? :o

Oh, and anything that has a foreign name (ie. creme brulee, Gateaux Negresse, crepes, tarte tatin, Pavlova, syllabub ('just because it's sounds so pretentious ;) ) or that even carries a foreign sounding word, ie. baked Alaska, Arctic Roll ;) ) will be eliminated.

I should get rid of that Eton one as well on the basis that it's too posh

Maybe you should change the thread titele to 'U75s favourite traditional English pudding which isn't posh' then... :p

I would if I could :( but I tried changing it last week to favourite desserts/afters/puddings to appease someone else  and it didn't work :o

PS: I'll make that the poll thread header:

'U75s favourite traditional English pudding which isn't posh or foreign sounding or have any foreign names or places in it' ;)

Not sure it'll fit on the title line though

My favourites:

Cherry Pie and Custard
Rhubarb Crumble and Custard
Profiteroles with hot sauce and extra ice-cream
Lemon Tart
Ice-cream (pref. Chocolate)
Those chocolate steampudding things you can put in the microwave. Yum.

Btw the definition of dessert is debatable - many sources say that the cheese course is a dessert course, equally Derbrett's says the course must consist entirely of fruit and that 'pudding' is the correct term for the sweet course. It comes from the French word desservir, so essentially means the course that clears the table.

<wonders if winding up the moderators with pednatry is really such a good idea ;)>

Yes, I know the above but stupidly put in the title "favourite dessert". That's why I tried to change it after it was pointed out :o

Maybe I'll eliminate ice-cream from the poll as well as it wasn't invented here and Profiteroles as they sound French

You do realise you sound like Alf Garnett don't you? :p

Nah ice-cream is well established enough I reckon - been around here since the 18th century and I think it was a brit who invented the ice cream cone and the first ice-cream machine.

Profiteroles are definately French.
