What a cool thread! Coldest was Prague one January: -30! *cries at the memory*
How many countries? Fuck knows, will try to count & come back here.
Continents I know: four... or five, depending on how you look at Turkey.

I went to a village in the middle of the bush in eastern Sierra Leone (it was called Lugbo, in Kailahun District near the Liberian border) and they told me I was the first white man ever to set foot there before giving me chickens, rice and coconuts. Can I get some kind of explorer bonus award for that?

Qucikest/cheapest hitchike?

Sion in Switzerland to manchester in the UK on CHF10 in 22 hrs.
Nice to London in about 2 days for about £4 (2 baguettes, 2 mars bars and 2 Paris metro tickets) between 2 of us. About 3 or 4 lifts.

Mine was something like 12 lifts!
I think we needed 2 to get away from Nice then got a big one to Paris by a fantastic couple who gave us a tour of the sights and let us stay in their place. Then we got a lift to Calais from a trucker who offered to take us to Belgium but we opted to hitch onto the ferry on separate trucks. So maybe 5 or 6 lifts max when I think about it.

Smallest bribe fucked off:

250 Indian Rupees - 3 quid - (no lights, insurance, license etc on moped)

Told coppers to get t' fuck and drove off. (They had no wheels :D )
Heh!

I was stopped in Goa on a moped by three local cops in 1988.

They wanted 1,000 Rupees to let me go.

Over the course of 20 minutes (with me saying I had little or no money,) I managed to bargain them down to the loose change I had in my pocket (the notes were tucked safely away, ummm..... elsewhere ;) ).

So, in the end, the bribe they accepted was the grand sum of 18 Rupees and let me ride off.

:D

Unfortunately, the very next night, the same three coppers stopped me again, realised it was me, figured I wasn't worth the effort bargaining with this time, took the bike away from me and sent me off on the (long) walk back to the mountain I was living on.

:(

Woof

Most vountries visted on a day ? - for me it its 4 - in about 2.5 hours - a nice drive around Lake Constanz - Switz/ger/Aust/Liech - I suppose with a bit of planning, you could do it in less.

Axis of evil visited ? - Belarus, North Korea and Cuba for a start

I once walked across the border between Turkey and Iran, but Turkish soldiers saw us and called us back within 100 yards. Does that count?

If you travelled right down to the south east ofTurkey you could in theory get down in the press-up position and have one hand in Iraq, one hand in Iran, and your feet in Turkey.

Hmmmmmmmm......Its a difficult one - In terms of "ticks" i.e. countries you can claim to have been to, Airports are not classed as countries, nor are docks or no mans lands between borders - We usually accept entering a country with the knowledge of the authorities is a "tick" - so you dont neccersarily have to have a passport stamp etc to have the "tick"

I have straddled the Border line and had my pic taken between N&S Korea in the DMZ - then wholly shifted myself into the South for a few seconds - although I did not enter S Korea and get a stamp, I am claiming it as a tick, as 1 metre in front of me were chrome helmeted S Korea soldiers to witness this - and they even filmed me making an " unwarranted and aggressive premetive excursion " into their territory.:D

Has anyone been to every single country in one particular continent (North America includes the Caribbean, Australasia includes the Pacific islands)? I'm almost there with South America, but the pesky Guyanas are fucking me up.

that bastard Andorra is royally screwing my plans for European domination up as well. * shakes fist*

"curse you picturesque tax haven mountainous republic "

(I should however be getting Rpublika Sprksa next week - is that a real place ? )

The Leeward islands are all that stand between me and North America. But there's just so many of them. How do they expect us to do Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica and all them? Maybe we should just not count any country smaller than Macedonia?

I can beat the 'coldest' record - 37C below, Norilsk, January 2004.

If you're going to add a 'biggest shithole' category, I reckon I have that in the bag with that as well.

We get a lot of claims for high altituders round 'ere mate.

If you check the rules of teh internets you'll see that unless you've been over 5900m you must STFU.

Sorry.

Yeah? Mine is probably Poipet on the Thai / Cambodian border. Incredibly poor, filthy, full of landmine victims in wheelchairs and pick-up drivers who try and hilariously rip you off, whilst being surrounded by five star casinos because of the lax gambling rules in Cambodia.

Horrible.

Exactly I'm talking a slummy boat journey in bunk class, not a cruise.

I've never been on one, but cruises are pretty cheap these days, just the same as yer average package hol. They also offer a good way to get five or six "ticks" in a week.

Furthest distance travelled for shortest stay:

No me, but a client of mine, once a month does this...

Fly from London to Melbourne, arriving 0445. Goes to a meeting. Departs Melbourne for London at 1530 the day he arrives.

45 hours flying to spend less than 10 hours in Oz.

Fuck that!
