U75 Radio Education Panel Discussion

Dante

A Lie will set you free
u75radio is trying to put together a panel show discussion hot educational topics to tie in with the begining of another school and university year.

Proposed topics include
1. The roleof faith schools in improving academic performance and their wider impact on society
2. Academies and Choice. Further widening the gap between schools achievements?
3. Ruth Kelly's recent educational reforms. Great? or a complete mess?

any further topics or suggestions appreciated.

If anyone here would like to appear on the discussion then please post in this thread or in the thread in the radio forum
http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=124802

The recording will take place in Brixton
Meeting at 6.30 to 7.00 at the Effra in Brixton, then going to record in the Cafe at the Ritzy cinema

but that is no bar to contributions from anywhere on the planet.

Cheers.

There are a fair few people on this site who have children with disabilities...I think that would make a good discussion topic. At the moment education authorities are avoiding statementing children because they can't afford to implement integration into mainstream education, while closing down special schools....

Im going through both trying to get my Daughter statemented and am also in 'disussions' ( read full on I want to strangle someone argument) becuase my Daughter is severely dyslexic and the schools she has been in havent met her needs and shes now been considered 'behind' ( becuase all the help they are givig is designed for slow learners rather than dyslexics) and not academically able despite an ed psych's report to the contrary( in one area she should be top of the class!.Were currently having to pay for teaching we can ill afford becuase they say shes getting adequate help ( she isnt) and that if shes not achieving she mustnt be academically able  ( circular argument) Were also trying to get her placed in an independent school funded by the LEA for senior school.
I'd be happy to take part in a discussion.

other possible topics for this or future debate:

the privitisation of education

maybe something about e-learning/adult courses?

There are all sorts of topics that could be brought up... I suppose someone radio-side (Dante ;)) could try and draw up an agenda that would 'work'?

(((LilMissHissyFit)))
would be great to have you on the panel.

Mrs M, Wookey, gawkroger and Kidda would you like to take part? in anyway, doesnt need to be a panelist.

So topics for discussion so far are:

home vs state vs private education (with an emphasis on home schooling vs state, though perhaps drawing on the similiarities bettwen private and home)

Need for "special schools" and integration. Who does conventonal schooling fail (i think that this will stem quite well from Home schooling). How to draw a balance between integration and segregation for the benefit of all pupils. (i know that this is prhased very clumsily, but its an area i dont have that much expereince in, perhaps someone could work out a different angle)

Privatisation of education and LEA's. It started with the selling of of gmaes fields. Now for 2 million you can control the curriculum for 1,500 Academy students

Tips for Final years and FIrst Years. Advice for all students.

Thats 4 topics to go with. I think that the last one is essential for a recording, though it might go out seperatly depending on what the schedule is like for september. But i do think that it would ge ta lot of listeners.

So. in terms of what would end up being broadcast.

each question would be edited down to around 10 mins
each segment would be available as a 20 minute download (so 2 q's per segment)

Bearing that in mind i would suggest that we do a recording to get material for more than one prog. a 10-15min advice for new students (and parents of students, including advice for mature students) that would go out early september.
then a 20-40min discussion on topics like those above to go out in the begining of October.

I would suggest a recording date for sometime next week (after the 15th). any days that suit?

What about the SATs? These are of no use to the children who sit them and only put them under pressure while causing the teachers to teach to the test thus narrowing the teaching. All of this is just to produce statistics for so called school 'league tables' so that the government can set itself 'targets' and be seen to meet them for electoral purposes.

Anyone interested in the issue of privatisation of education should try to get hold of a booklet written by Bernard Reagan of the NUT on this topic. He is of course against it.

I cannot contribute myself as I am going away on holiday in a few days.

Hocus

well similarities between home ed and private would include the higher teacher-pupil ratio, the greater ability to adapt lessons, the independence from state control etc.

One of the more interesting discourses currently being developed is in comparing state with other forms of education in terms of assesment driven methedologies.
And whilst assesments are given to high a priorty in education, examining what works well elsewhere is one of the important stages to adapting our state system for the better. (or worse, of course)

Yes ! I`d be up for that !

So those who are definitly interested and up for taking part are (from this thread and the one in radio)

LilMissHissyFit
MaidMarian
The B
Treefrog
Dante.

Anyone else interested in joining in?

otherwise the next step is to sort out the dates for recordings. How about next week, one evening, or next weekend?
and where can people get too easily?
In terms of background noise kitchens are generally the best, or beer gardens (though i also suspect that the coffee shops at the south bank would work quite well. particularly the ones in the Festival hall.)

OK, some dates, either
Saturday (daytimeish)
Monday pm
Tuesday pm
Wednesday pm

after that i will have run out of time to do anything on u75 radio so wont be able to record it.

Ok, how about Brixton on Monday at 6.30 to 7pm
meeting in the effra beer garden (rain withstanding)
panel confirmed for Monday so far

Bluestreak
isvicthere?
treefrog
Dante (bear with the mic)

questions will be taken from this thread and other threads in the forum.
so if you would like to put forward a question then please pm me or post here.

Sent a PM to Dante saying I was 50-50 and will confirm by phone (to you since I lack his numero)

probably best to call the frog anyway as i am notoriously bad at answering my phone

Rain might stop play im afraid tonite unless we can find an alternative venue.

im not sure where in Brixton we can do the recording if not able to do it outside. the interior of any pub and the cafes i can think of are far to noisy.

any suggestions on alternative venues?

a Brixton thread has suggested the Ritzy cafe as an alterntaive venue, so that might be a good plan. Stick with meeting in the Effra and we will go from there.

However.

At the moment the panel is only guarenteed at isvicthere? dante and treefrog (hopefully with the B and miss giggles as well) so if there are any other urbanites who would like to have their opnions heard, please come along.

well if he is serious, then the Effra at 6.30 to 7 then off to the ritzy cafe.

I think that we can organise anotherone for later in the autumn perhaps outside of London so as to give others a fair hearing.
