tuning guitars

i doubt you would find it was a perfect E if you checked it against a tuner, have you tried? i mean i can get something that sounds pretty much right, but it probably wouldn't get a perfect green light on a good tuner.

In which case use a fork, although if you go for multiple tunings you'd need multiple forks. :)

i can tune a guitar easily by ear, but if is on stage (lots of other sounds going on plus the sound of someone tuning up is pretty annoying) or in a studio (where someone who is recording you might just want you to be absolutely perfectly in 2 seconds, rather than messing around with a tuning fork and maybe being a fraction out, whcih might only be discovered some way down the line when you discover one bit has fucked up the whole recording) then a tuner is useful.

I dont have perfect pitch no so I could not say 'Oh that's a Bb' and be correct.

But if I had the bass note I could do it from there, I always have and always do. Mind you I have been playing stringed instruments for *cough* twenty odd years now, plus the ones I learnt on dont have frets to guide you, it's all by ear. ;) Like I say, shut your eyes and listen as you turn the tuning peg - the note will slide in and you will feel it.

well yeh i reckon anyone who's been playing for more than like 1 month can tune once they have one note!!

Exactly, and thats why I dislike tuning things for guitars. Its not rocket science eh! :D

What about capos tho, I have heard a decent guitarist mutter 'Play properly!' when someone pulled out a capo....

but i have pointed out a few occasions when they are useful. noone buys them to tune up with every single time they play, i think you are misunderstanding their purpose.

I've got a mate who used to be a rigger/rodie type bloke - setting up equipment for bands on tour... I handed him an old guitar of mine the other day, hadn't been touched in over ten years and he said "I'm gonna show off now" he tuned it by ear in about 10 seconds, all the strings open, none of the 5th fret or harmonics... Handed me a tuner, plugged it in and every string was absolutely perfect.

So it is possible. Just takes lots of practice I guess....

Just bought a Squire Stratocaster, with hard case from a charity shop £25.

That's six geetars now. :)

nice work. just got me a Squier bass, love it.

back on the thread, there's a book called Your Brain On Music (or something) that claims that when people remember a song in their head, they remember it at the exact right pitch.

...which means that everyone has the potential for perfect pitch :hmm:
