Tunes Most People Don't Realise are Covers

I know its been mentioned already, but Daft Punk so heavily sample, it may as well be a cover - especially of Cola Bottle Baby

Check dis for proof:-

Johnny Cash - Hurt.

Even though Trent Reznor from NIN who orginally wrote it is quoted as saying the song now belongs to Johnny.

I adore both versions.

"House of the rising sun" The Animals. A mate of mine from Dover appeared on top of the pops with the group " the Sundowners" Before the animals took it and made it a hit. Not sure who wrote it though !

Bob Dylan also covered it, although I'm not sure if his cover predated the Animals' cover

The song is a traditional lament that originated in the brothels of New Orleans, a song with a sad and interesting history

on the subject of the Animals, there's also Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood which was written by Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell and Sol Marcus for Nina Simone

eta

also I Will Always Love You, was originally written and performed by Dolly Parton, not Whitney

I didn't realise Summer of 69 wasn't done by a punk band until this morning. I was lying in my tent waiting for the kick in and it just didn't happen.

I'd enjoyed the Ramones' "I don't wanna grow up" for years before I realised it was a Tom Waits song: strangely, it's an absolutely perfect Ramones tune, from the title upwards. Dunno if it wuz written specifically for da Bruddaz, but it fits em like a glove.

Tom Waits did it first I think
iirc that's what the notes to ramones anthology say anyway - don't think there's anything about it being written for them, but it sounds like it should've been.

also Rage Against the machine's version of Ghost of Tom Joad - fits them perfectly.
eta and their Maggies farm
