Triathlon 2008

What time are you looking at for a 40km cycle?

80 mins, I would hope. By far my strongest discipline. I fully expect to come out of the water last. I would hope to be able to do the run in 70 mins.

I want to beat 3.15 so will need to do the swim in 45 mins or less, which shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry to crash the thread an all but does it bother you triathletes at all that the sport is getting increasingly expensive? The London tri is a shocking amount to enter and has gone up considerably in the last 3 years...and I'm not really sure where the moneys going, esp as it has big sponsorship (Mazda). How do you all feel about the costs of being a triathlete?

Good point IMO. I did the London Duathlon last year, organised by the same people and the cost was crazy compared to the otehr regular half marathons, marathons, fell runs etc I do. Felt very corporate. I have, however, been a total mug and signed up to do this http://www.etapecaledonia.co.uk/ which is again organsed by the same company.

I think the cost is shocking to be honest, signed up because it forms a part of a year of events I am doing, but I personally do not think a lot of the company who manage these events.

If you can get your time down then there are some good events around which are not too expensive.

VO Two charge about £35 for an Olympic (but it has a 3hr cut-off).

Looks good! Cycling is where I struggle though to make these more competitive events. I am running half marathons in under 1hr 25mins but I am really not a strong cyclist - which was why I signed up to do the Etape, despite the organisers, because it is not the most challenging course and I should be fine for the cut off time. Guess I just need to train more but I find cycling training hard, running 30-40 miles a week is manageable, just, but cycling on top takes so much time.

My swimming isn't improving fast enough to make a triathlon a realistic option at the moment. Can't get the breathing right and end up completely panting for breath after a single length. Have just learnt to scuba dive though and I think that's helped my breathing a bit.

I'm still setting my sights on a sprint triathlon at the end of the season and hoping a summer at the lido is going to help me out.

Beeboo - when the Lido opens I'll give you some tips if you want - I got gaijinboy from doggy paddle to respectable front crawl. You're almost certainly trying to take in too much breath and just exhausting yourself.

I'm signing up for a couple of cheapo local sprints - one in May and one in June if you'd like to come with me. Especially the May one - it's on the 2nd BH Monday and I'd be going alone by train (which means a super early start and cycling to Clapham Junction), so it would be nice to have another girl with me. It's a really nice triathlon and the swim is very short and in a heated outdoor pool. I did this one about 3/4 years ago

When you apply you state how long you think it will take you to do the swim and then your starting position is adjusted accordingly. So, you can put a very slow time and swim with the breast stroke swimmers. I'll be ahead of you only to see you sprint past me on the run... :D

The cycle and the run are also stunning - the cycle is riverside and the run is though a gorgeous country park.

I wouldn't worry about perfecting your swim yet tbh.. there are always loads of people who are novices and struggle with at least one discipline. Usually it's swimming. You also see people on mountain bikes/commuters and all sorts. And then there's the "runners" like me...:D

I'll almost certainly do one of the mid-week ones at Dorney Lake too as it's also accessible by public transport and actually a very easy and fast course - plus it's all off road and an open water swim which I really like. I did this last year and it was lovely. I'm looking at doing this one:

http://www.f3events.co.uk/race_view.php?i=4

And last but not least - I would definitely be interested in doing a relay olympic tri with 2 other girls (I don't know if I'll do another full olympic myself this year yet). I managed to get gaijinboy and 2-3 of his friends to come along to a relay last year. They really got into it and got all competitive. We were in a team together. This year I'd like to get a girls' team together to take on their boys' team - that way you could just do the run but still get a feel for the day. I could do either the cycle or the swim depending on what a 3rd person would prefer - but my cycling is my strongest point.

PM me if you'd like to join.

i'd quite like to :o

I can only realistically do the swimming atm, i'm suffering badly from shin splints and i haven't ridden my bike for 6 months :D

when were you thinking of doing it? Going to sort out some bicycle parking at my office this week, so given a bit of time i might be able to do the cycling bit.

which part would you want to do?

You doing the swim is fine... I'm more than happy to do the cycling. We just need to persuade Beeboo to do the running! :)

*shouts at Beeboo*

oop, belated response, sorry I'm a bit out of the u75 loop at the mo :o

Yes, count me in for the running! I'm well out of practice at running but a boot up the backside is what I need. Is there a date for this relay?

I really like the look of the Thames Turbo, but I've been a bit insanely busy and don't think I'm going to be fit for it by end of May :(

Up for a bit of lido based swimming coaching  :)

Excellent!! YAY. Well I'm just about to sign up for TT now - although I really won't be tri-fit either tbh. Certainly, I'll only have gotten about 5 days swimming - but it'll be something to aim for.

I'm going to look for an olympic distance tri then in the 2nd half of June that we do as a relay. Will get back to you.

2nd half June sounds good! Might be away weekend in the middle of June, 15th or therabouts, but am def in for one after that.

Right, maybe I'll go for a run today then! :D

ok.. having problems with 2nd half of June in/around London - there's only sprint distances. There are plenty if we're willing to go further afield and stay overnight elsewhere.

Otherwise..

1. There's this one on Sunday July 13th at Dorney Lake (Eton) - which is easy to get to.
http://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/detail.php?id=1317

"The Dorney Steelman Triathlon is a 1,500m open water swim in the clear, clean waters of the rowing lake before taking to the closed, flat road circuit for an 8-lap bike course covering 40.8k. The final 10k run follows a 4 lap loop along the side of the rowing tank on the tarmac paths. We reckon that if you're looking for a PB over accurate distances then this is where you're going to find it."

I've done a few at Dorney Lake - it's a lovely swim and run. Personally I find the cycle a little boring as it's so very flat and just doing a circuit - but it is very very fast and car free - which is great.

2. Sunday 13th July 2008 - Gosfield Standard Distance Triathlon

(Checked it out and it's about 5 miles from Braintree - so we could probably get there on the day too)

1500m Open Water Swim / 40k Bike (2 laps) / 10k Run (on-&-off road)

This event returns for it's second year and organiser are looking to build on the success of last year's race. The event takes place at the picturesque Gosfield Lake Resort. The race begins with a 1500m open water swim in the lake and is followed by a 2 lap 40k cycle on local country roads. The race finishes with a 10k on-and-off road run on local footpaths and trails.

Further information about the race including race notes will appear shortly.

The main problem is getting to these places by public transport. Often these events start at 7am or earlier and it's not always possible to make it to them on time. However, I think that the two lads that Gaijinboy will team up with have cars and may be able to drive us. The Steelman at Dorney Lake started at 9am last year and if it does so again this year - that will be doable by train from Clapham Junction.

The Braintree one - I think it's quick enough to get to Braintree by train from Liverpool Street - but I don't know what time it starts at yet. There's a 5:30am train from Liverpool Street which gets in at 6:41am - so if it starts after about 8am we'd prolly be ok.

I've got a car as well so I could drive if we end up going for one which isn't great by public transport.

July dates are probably alright with me too - and a chance I could get myself in half way decent 10k form by then :D

Excellent... once Baldrick gets back to us, I'll let the boys know and see if they have a preference. Tbh.. Dorney Lake will be the easiest... but I wouldn't mind doing something a little different since I've already been up there 2x and may well do a sprint up there in a few weeks. Let's see what Baldrick says and the boys too. :)

(ETA .. are you sure you don't want to do the TT one on May 26th? - there are tons of beginners at them you know!)

Right, i don't mind which one we do :) only issue is i'm in Brum, which would mean i'd need to come and stay with someone the night before?

also i'm going to need a wetsuit too i reckon for this open water malarkey but i think there's a shop that i can hire one from near me.

i'm quite excited about this now  a bit daunted too though tbh :hmm:

You can certainly come and stay with me and depending on what size you are, I can lend you a wetsuit too. I have a couple of sizes. Ideally you want one that fits you like a glove, but for a one off, I wouldn't be too worried about it. The only thing is that if you haven't swum in a wetsuit before, you might want to get some practice in first as it can be quite wierd... I've seen quite a few people panic as it's so constricting.

If you do want to hire one, get it from http://www.triuk.com/ and get it now as they'll let you hire one for £25 for the whole season. (This is why we have so many wetsuits - we've ended up keeping them).

I'll send an email out to the boys' team and see if they have any preference over those two events.

that hire place looks like a bargain, will investigate when i get paid, thanks

i'm going to look like such a twit at the swimming pool :D :D :D

to avoid looking like a twit at the swimming pool i seem to have joined the local triathlon club :hmm:

they run open water swim sessions regularly, so i should (fingers crossed) have completed at least one before the big day. just need to get paid on friday and then i will hire a wetsuit

blimey.. that's keen!

You'll really enjoy the open-water swimming.. especially with this great weather!

We're going to pwn the boys.. :D

whoa, you two are scaring me now :D

I'm sooo out of practice.

I'd be tempted by the tri on the 26th but I might be away for the bank hol, plus I'm not in shape at all. :(

Still 3 weeks to go for Thames Turbo and ages before July 12th! I only started swimming again properly yesterday and I don't know that I'll be up to speed with running at all (although I'm a terrible terrible runner at the best of times!). I'm looking at it as a good training session.

Gaijinboy has a team of 2 at the moment... the 3rd will come on board I'm pretty sure - he's very competitive.

Right - the 3rd member is confirmed. I reckon we should probably just do Dorney Lake - it's the easiest to get to and a good set-up.

I'll fill in the application form.. which means Beeboo and Baldrick - that you will need to supply me with some info. PM en-route. :)

Sorry, been offline for a couple of weeks, but Dorney Lake is fine - still haven't done any running or indeed exercise of any variety for weeks and weeks and weeks...gulp! But I'll get back into it  Let me know about money and that.

Did you do the TT this weekend? Weather wasn't the best

did my first 7.5k run on monday in preperation for the Londom triathlon
