Tree identification game - for all your tree lovers

I like the thread. I"ve been trying to find some links to pics that might stump the panel, but I can't find any that don't identify the trees in the site name.

P.s. you can tell a London Plane in winter because its branches and twigs have this zigzag pattern that's pretty unique.

Yes, but as we all good honest folk on here, we don't cheat, so go ahead. I promise not to right click and look at "properties"

Well I only guessed that because they're normally big and the leaves are lowish to the ground and you often see them all on their lonesome :D

((((oaks))))))

They grow in forests, but the forests were cut down. Often, the lonesomes are the last of the forest. Sometimes, you'll see oaks on a roundabout, and that's the last of the forest felled to build the road.

The crown often looks flat-bottomed in English fields cos the beasts have grazed as high as they can reach.

We used to use the seeds from 'chinese lanterns' (IIRC) as itching 'powder'.

The seed pods were round and transparent and you could see the flat seeds inside. :)

what are chinese lanterns?

Got one! Anyone seen this tree before?

another interesting factoid. Lots of them are protected as well as well aren't they due to their age, or am I thinking of Yew trees or both?

Both, and many others too. Depends where they grow, their age and so forth.

yet more factoids :)
Just tried googling to find a pic. It's definately not chinese lanterns.

The seed pods are a bit like a monocle with a tough fibre running round the outer edge. The center is paper thin and and you can see the 2/3 flat round seeds through it.

I'll have to let my rusty brain work on it for a bit.

honest? :D Look like mother-of-pearl. Where does honesty come from then?

From Wikipeadia

The common name "Honesty" arose in the 16th century, and it may be due to the translucent seed-pods which are like flattened pea-pods and borne on the plant through winter
