Travelling by train in Europe

It's all local tickets and special offers.
The mate I'm going with made subtle hints after our last trip and this time we are staying in €20 B&Bs and not €10 railway workers hostels. :-)

I'm off on Sunday to Munich-Salzburg-Villach-Ljubljana-Zagreb-Belgrade-Subotica-Szeged-Budapest-Esztergom-Sturovo-Bratislava-Brno-Prague-Ceske Budeovice and then back home again.

are they actual places or did you just hit random keys on yr keyboard? :p

hoping to go to Budapest soon, when my friends move over there to begin a self-sufficient 'Good Life' hippy lifestyle :)

I want to go from Prague to Zywiec in Poland next nea. Where, may I ask, did you source your ticket?

Actually Guinevere - you could tae the ferry to the Hook of Holland and then get a train to Hamburg. Google maps says the drive is 4-ish hours. Would certainly be eaier to travel in Holland as a lot of people speak English and the trains are lovely. Really lovely.

@ 5T. we are using a combo of special deals we saw on the DB website and locally bought tickets and special offers. So not sure of the exact price, yet.

Prague to Zywiec is straightforward, go via Cadca in Slovakia. If there's a couple of you or more you can can do the Czech portion (which is the longest) VERY cheaply with the ticket called Kilometricka Banka, ask me about it when you go.

That would have been a good plan!

Actually, we tried to go on the Eurostar, but it was closed by a fire, so we went train, train, ferry, train, train, train and then met up with my parents in Gent, Belgium, and drove, over two days, to Hamburg. :)

I hope you're not going to fly to Munich or anything silly like that.

Oh, I didn't look at the date of thr OP. Glad it went well :)

Standard second class fare from Prague to Cadca (have a look on a map) is about € 19 for the 433 KMs.

You can leave Prague just after 10 AM AM and in Zywiec around 1830 with an hours wait at Cadca, have a beer and the schnitzel in the station pub isn't that bad.

Traipsing through St Pancras Int every day means that I get terrible urges to travel to Europe (as opposed to on FCC)

By the way the Channel tunnel fire timetables seem to be sorted and its a haven of calm and order when I go through.......
