training as a computer bod

So if I were to go this route of self-study (as a film extra I get plenty of days off. Too many.) then what area of "being somnething to do with computers" should I study? What pile of books should I get?
That's a bit like asking "so what area of engineering should I go into?"

The world of IT is massive and varied. You really need at least some tentative idea of what you might be interested in.

More often than not these days people make a beeline for web stuff, which is a two edged sword - loads of jobs, huge competition. Everyone and his dog has got a website these days, so it's a bit harder to land a job based solely on an amateur, home grown project (unless it's really good).

The less glamorous echelons of IT are sometimes a better bet - people can't function without networks in the modern world, yet to most people they're scary worlds of confusion and fear. A good network engineer will never be out of work. Even when half the web design team's been laid off, companies still need the bloke with the proverbial spanner to keep the systems humming.

There's seriously big money to be made in business IT - development, support, etc, for enterprise level apps - but you won't easily get into that without several years experience.

The real question is, what do you want to do?
