You're right - should be loads cheaper - but I guess if I think about transfers from airport etc, probably not a huge amount in it (except for difference in time it takes 
).

Exactly. Getting the train to Belgium and Amsterdam this weekend has totally reinforced this with me...it is so much nicer, and you get to feel smug about your carbon emissions. We shall certainly be training to Spain in the future
I've been looking into this, but going the other way.
You can get a return ticket Paris/Madrid for £70(ish) if you're flexible. The day train or, morning departure from Paris to Madrid gets the countryside views.
At Madrid buses leave very frequently to almost anywhere in Spain and they are dirt cheap. A one way from Madrid to Granada is just €13 for example. The buses aren't to bad at all and often take less time than the provincial trains.
I've worked out a return trip based on bus to Madrid and train to Paris the Eurostar to London that works out at around £150 for travel. I'm planning days in Madrid and Paris also mind so, accommodation, food and drink will add much more.
Flying from Granada to London would normally cost about the same for a return. Although cheap tickets can be had for around €60 (plus the tax etc) for midweek flights in low season.
