this works too if you have a zone 1-6 travel card, you can get a ticket from the zone 6 boundary to wherever you're going. I've got a zone 6 boundary to Sheffield ticket before.
I think *technically speaking* if you buy a ticket from A-B and B-C, you are supposed to alight at B, even if you get back on the same train. So a particularly jobsworth conductor could chuck you off but not stop you getting back on.
