Tour de France 2020

I mix him up in my head with Robbie McEwan and think he's doing well for someone in their 40s

I thought it was McEwan-esque, the way he came from virtually nowhere.

It seemed true what Boulting and Millar were saying, that you don't get the whole-team lead-out trains anymore, in the way Columbia did for Cav and T-Mobile for Zabel. Anyone care to point out that I'm wrong?

I thought Greipel's teams were still trying to do it last couple seasons... but I don't recall it working much.

Trains are still a thing, but the skill now seems to be the ability to hop from wheel to wheel and read the run in to find the right group or individual to follow.

I think Yates was in virtual yellow for a few mins yesterday, after he got that climb bonus. It wasn't mentioned by press or commentators though. Have I misunderstood the system?

They're more like mini-trains now with the emphasis on a brilliant lead-out guy to create openings and gaps.
Look at how crap Viviani is this year without Michael Morkov.
Talking of which I wonder how Sam Bennett feels about his preferred lead-out guy, The Flying Mullett, not being in the DQS team?
Tbh I was kinda disappointed that DQS signed Sam as Fabio Jacobsen really deserved to be a number one sprinter. Anyway sadly that's besides the point now but anyways part of the deal was that Bennett would ride the tour because he never got a chance at BORA as they always went with that guy in the expensive sunglasses.

Fairly easy day for them tomorrow, the finish is a bit a drag uphill, that in previous years could have been pretty much a safe bet for someone like Sagan, but he really doesn't seem to be on form right now. Ewan again maybe?

Hope you've all got Roglic in your fantasy Tdf teams

I do old fashioned betting. Didn't fancy Ala at 2/1 so thought I'd put a curse on Ineos and back Carapaz at what looked at the time as a stupidly generous 33/1. I wouldn't have thought he would have finished 28 seconds down though alongside the EF Education kids. Had high hopes for those two.
I agree with beesonthewhatnow about Ewan tomorrow though you can never tell how acute 4th cats can be without seeing them. He's favourite at 2/1 with Bennett 11/4and Nizzolo at 6s.
Big Sam hopefully in green after tomorrow and the white jersey is staying where it is from now to Paris ;)

We stayed in Gap in same hotel as Eurosport many years ago. It might have been the day we Walked up Alpe D'Huez
Its a beautiful area as you will see if watching live today ....spoilers avoided if not (this working from home has advantages)

Well, this is turning out to be rather dull. Nobody could even be bothered to get a breakaway going  :D

DQS did try but got immediately snuffed.
Only highlight was Sam going into virtual green.
The only other interesting thing was that Carlton Kirby once bought a truffle cutter by mistake.

Good lord that was a ferocious pace up that final climb. Roglic takes it in no small part to a ridiculously strong pull from Sepp Kuss.
And Wout van Aert did a huge turn. It was a show of team strength but all the main players were not far behind Roglic and it's early days.
and WvA wins a stage the next day too

Ineos/Landrover did another textbook job of keeping Bernal safe until the 3km mark, this time Kwiatkowski taking charge on the front when it mattered.

Good lord that lad can ride a bike. Did a huge turn going up a mountain yesterday, wins a sprint finish today. Ridiculous.

Nice to see Bennett take green as well.

What a season he's having.
If he was a team leader like Sagan he'd probably win the green with ease. Nice to see Bennet take it though
DQS in :) and :D

An interesting stage tomorrow. Flat at the start then constantly undulating, leading to an important climb...

The key bit is that the first 3 riders over the Col de la Lusette get time bonuses of 8, 5, and 2 seconds. Looking at the profile it would normally be one for a strong breakaway, but will those bonuses tempt the GC teams to reel them in? It's tough, with a 4km section towards the end that averages nearly 10%. Once that is dealt with its a long uphill drag to the finish - 8km at 4%.

Rules is rules, besides the commissars cannot be seen to be so openly favouring a Frenchman.
A Brit in yellow and a Brit in green and Inios not involved, at least not yet.
A great day for Sam an the Irish.

Wiggo suggesting that Quickstep making such an error and losing the jersey at this stage of the race was rather convenient for them :hmm: :D

I don't agree. Much as we all like JA, is he a real GC contender? For him, spending as many days in possible in yellow may be his goal. He really honours the jersey when he wears it and usually fights like a demon to keep it
