Tour de France 2007!

McEwan's stage win yesterday was magnificent, he got onto the back of the bunch with 5k to go, no-one bar one commentator gave him a chance, no-one saw him until he was metres from the line when he suddenly shot thru like a greyhound out of a trap. Wonder how his hand is tho as he was holding it awkwardly after the shunt.

what time is the highlights program tonight and what channel is it on? gone are the days when i was a student on summer hols wiht eurosport. used to love watching 3 or 4 hours of live cycling.

yeah that was quite an awesome stage win though that Quickstep train was never going to work; they started it 4 clicks out and there's no way they were going to be able to keep that up on the first day when everyone in the pack is fresh. doh.

Neither of Eurosport's commentators were watching Robbie, I think expecting a Boonen-Hushovd match-up, but I had a sneaky suspision and so kept my eyes out for a Lotto jersey. What do you know, like a million times before he came from nowhere. You would've thought after so many years of doing that the lead-out trains of the other teams might've worked out how to counter it.

Shame about Cav yesterday, but it's a learning experience. Today was bizarre, with Boonen seeming to gift it to Steegmans. It was great seeing the crash victims watching the finish on the big screen. :)

I'd like to follow the Tour this year, but know almost nothing about it. Is there a website which explains the basics: Tactics, team dynamics, points and time calculations etc?

That was better from Quickstep today but then they only had about 30 tops in the bunch to fend off.
Shame about Cav; as far as i could see he was 4th in the T-Mobile train and was one of the first to go down.
Boardman reckons it was Zabel that caused it.

Boonen didn't have the pull to get by Steegmans but both men seem to be very gracious about it. I really hope Cav can get it together tomorrow but team mate Eisel is the form sprinter at T-mob (8th and 12th) so perhaps Cav might be working for him instead of himself.

That'd be good.. as much I love cycling, I know nothing about racing. Would love to get into it.

A few weeks after riding in my new steed I might finally try joining the group runs that start at Palace on a Sunday. Dulwich Paragon innit?

There's a brief intro here: http://tour.itv.com/page.asp?partid=5

The tactics section gives the very basics of the role of domestiques and touches on breakaways.

Thing to remember is that it's a team sport. The team leader is protected at all times and the designated sprinter (each team usually has one of those as well as serious contender for the yellow jersey) gets deidicated minders or lead-out men when it looks like there's goingt o be a mass finish.

The Sunday Paragon bunch is very fast and might dent your enthusiasm somewhat.:)

There was an amusing Zoe Williams article about the time she went out with them - very much along those lines.... :D :D

They actually do more harm than good those guys. When we all met up at Palace for the ride down to see the tour me and another bloke had worked out a route. We succeeded in losing them somewhere near Sevenoaks, I know its not really sporting but we had a 16 yo on his first clubrun and they were stretching the pace a bit too much. They don't think of the wider picture, if you continually drop a newbie that newbie won't come back for more...and ultimately thats cycling's loss.

Chris and anyone else, PM me when you're ready and we'll do a nice social 40 miler out to Boxhill, have some cake and come back.

Ah, I thought they did an easier one on Sunday and a faster one on Saturday's.. Boxhill sounds good.. will probably be at least a month though.. 5 weeks away from the bike has made me very lardy.. need a lot of riding first, and I'm getting married in a couple of weeks, so honeymoon as well!

Nice one, Sig.. as always

I just think you should turn up. If you come out with the Brixton lot then we make sure nobody gets left behind and the ride takes everybodys pace into account.

Anyway, enjoy your wedding and honeymoon, congrats :)

didn't see it on TV but been following the newsflashes on letour.com

apparently the bunch caught the escapees inside the last Km and soon as the peloton made contact Cancellera broke away; seems Zabel was very close but fuck him...can't wait to see the highlights on ITV4
