Who do you want to win the Champions League?

As an aside, a friend [United fan] said neither had won the league for over 20 years?
Does this matter to you? Would it tarnish the victory of either?

In 2006 this was a pretty standard attitude:

But this approach isn't so prevalent anymore. I wouldn't, as a neutral, mind 32 of the champions of each country playing 2 leg ties as a knock out. Less football but easier to understand and no coefficients and farce of "is X in Champion's League football/battle for fourth".

I don't know who to support. Who are you supporting?

Should do a Want and Expect combination options. I suspect they are two very different answers :D

(Though, tbf for anyone that expects Spurs to win...:hmm:)

In relation to the OP that maybe a traditional way to do things but traditional goes out the window when more clubs from one country have better teams than the majority of the other countries and have bigger fan bases and money and can practically hold UEFA to ransom as they did 20 years ago by saying if the old style European cup wasn’t changed they would form their own European super league.

UEFA bowed on condition that the g8 committee or whatever it was called at the time bisbanded and the champions league was born. themselves have realised the competition in its current format makes a shit ton more money than it ever would the old way. And money dictates everything.

Wasn’t there already rumblings again recently from the so called 20 elite clubs that they want to fuck off UEFA and start their own league in tandem with the domestic leagues so it became a more fairer 19 game a season competition with home and away fixtures switching every year or something to that effect and even the opportunity for matches to be played in neutral grounds meaning they could take it on tour to America etc. More matches. More money. So called best team actually wins.

Wow, I get a thirteen year old quote in the OP. My opinion hasn't really changed, although my acceptance that nothing's going to change in terms of the way the competition is organised has grown.

If memory serves, the change to European Cup qualification, and maybe format, stemmed from the "big" European clubs threatening UEFA with a breakaway. I'm fairly certain their chief cheerleader was the honourable Silvio Berlusconi.

Is this a version of the European Super League idea How a European Super League could look - and how likely it still is to happen or something else?

Mixed feelings on this considering Sissoko (spurs) & Wijnaldum (Liverpool) were both NUFC players before Mike Ashleys’ greed/incompetence saw us relegated a couple of seasons ago.

If I had to pick it would possibly be spurs as I’ve lived with more spurs fans over the years than lfc fans. On second thoughts that’s also a good enough reason to go for Liverpool.

In these times of national division over Brexit, I think it would be a lovely gesture of unity if both teams won.

I was referring to the early 90s, when the European Cup was two-legged straight knock-out for champions only. Milan were the dominant club in Italy at the time, with Serie A home to the wealthiest clubs, but Berlusconi unsurprisingly wanted more. UEFA caved and started letting in runners up at first, expanding to third and fourth in some countries, and reformatted the competition to have group stages, guarenteeing clubs revenue.

I'm not sure the English clubs were all that involved, as they were concentrating on doing similar to the Football League with the Premiership, and had only just emerged from the Hysel ban.
