Tottenham V Man U game

2002 world cup was before anyone had even heard of rooney
2004 euros he was the star until he got injured
2006 wc hampered by injury just before tournament and baffling team selections
2008 england didn't qualify

There's every chance that Rooney will win a trophy for england

Ho ho ho

Yeah, pele was fucking lucky to play for one of the greatest sides in the history of football.
And as you say most of his goals were scored in a piss-easy brazil league...

Nonsense, he is the chav Trevor Francis.

If youse weren't so blinded by short sighted hatred youse would erect a statue to the boy Rooney, the 28 million youse get for him did more for Everton FC than all Dixie Deans goals, embrace him as the pride of your youth system. Youse can even bask in some of his glory or just celebrate the trophie bonuses that were contracted into his transfer.

And was the best player therein.

I love how people just say this, Pele was labelled the best player in the world when outside the stadium people had two high light reels and newspaper reports to judge him on.

I'll ask you again, how many matches have you seen Pele in?

Say what you like about Rooney, he knows his football and I'd love to see his reaction if you asked him if he was better than Pele.

Curiously though the people actually inside the stadium seemed to hold the very same view.

I know, its madness that he only has universal acclaim, his formidable international record (92 apps, 77 goals, and appeared in four world cups of which Brazil won three - and he scored in all four, and in two finals) and a vast haul of silverware to justify his position in world football.

and the people in the stadium where privy to witnessing the other top players across the world?

you have nothing to go on but a banal truism, you've never watched Pele in a significant amount of games to make such a judgement.

Maradonna I can say was the best player in the world, because he did it under the scrutiny of television and global communications.

No player will ever become such an undisputed 'best player in the world' likd Pele, Best and Maradonna did because there is just far more media coverage. Their every game is scrutinised and judged in a way it wasn't for players in the past whose reputations preceded them for much longer and were less vulnerable to constant scrutiny.

I'm not saying Pele wasn't great, I'm saying that people who proclaim him the best player ever in the hear and now are just indulging unthinking banalities that have moved into truisms, they've probably never seen him play a full 90 mins in their life.

From the highlight reels I've seen I think Eusebio was better but again thats on very limited material.

But you have the testimonies of people who were there, and his record with which to back things up. Noone would doubt that Dixie Dean is the best striker ever to play for Everton, despite there being very few people left alive who saw him play (and none who have seen every Everton forward play).

As for Maradona, he was demonstrably a cheat whose repeated behaviour should mean that he is never mentioned as one of the great players, but sadly we live in a world that is far more tolerant of such people nowadays.

Thwe hand of god was a act of mercy he was forced to carry out by history, otherwise we might have to listen to England go on about 2 fucking world cups.

Pele was and is a unprincipled cunt who lick the boots of the military junta and organised crime, whilst pimping his face to everything he could. I much prefer Maradonna's self destructiveness, much more human and honest.

Pele has a amazing statistical record and medal haul but it hardly tells the full story, the game was massively different then, less tactical, more open and hectic.

Personally I reckon todays players would anihilate the greats of the past, they just have much more training and technology to augment natural talent. A player like George Best wouldn't be so effected, he never relied on strength and drive like Pele did, he was much trickier, Messi reminds me of him and of course the young Ryan Giggs was the spit.

Any other fantasy players on here?

I really really can't figure out the bonus points thing. Tevez was man of the match according to the points today. Despite only playing for 45 mins. And despite Ronaldo scoring two and assisting one (he wasn't even the top 3). Bizarre.

Tevez was better than Rooney too apparently btw.

Not a hope!

Rooney was the best player on the pitch. tevez raised the tempo and Ronaldo was lethal but it was Rooney who grabbed the game by the balls.

And Maradona's links to the Camorra, his coke addiction, his antics on the field and his taking of ephedrine at the 1994 World Cup should be just written off?

As for the comparisons between generations, you are perhaps true though one of course wonders how people would adjust to a maximum wage, not being able to move clubs whenever a player feels like it, possibly having to fight in one of two world wars and in general being subjected to a lot more physical style of football than nowadays.

Actually that last one is a good idea - "Ronaldo, today you'll be marked by Andoni Goikoetxea"

:D

Well I imagine if he played under todays officials the only butchering he'd be doing would be in the changing room ten mins into the game.

Pele v Maradonna? only one winner.

And as for calling him a cheat? more like Shilton being a twat.

An ex pro decides it iirc.

You know he failed a drugs test, right?

This is nothing to do with this thread by the way, or indeed this discussion - but has there ever been a more aggro-focused World Cup than Italia 90? I was thinking earlier about how outrageous the final was, then remembered Germany vs Holland, and Cameroon vs Argentina, and so on.

Italia 90 was an appalling collection of 0-0 draws, diving, professional fouls, outright brutality and fuck knows what else. It was when international football hit rock bottom imho. The most celebrated side there were Cameroon and even they were outright dirty bastards (remember the formation assault on Caniggia in the opening game).

That was one of my favourite games ever (edit: Cameroon 1 Argentina 0), watched from some campsite in Jersey as I recall. After they won the game I was convinced they would win the World Cup, its a shame they came up against England and all their spawn in that tournament.

As for the assault its probably still one of the most ever performed on a football pitch.

Third time's always the charm :D

There's a reason I don't like Argentina and it's not 1986. That 1990 team were a horrible, horrible bunch of nasty bastards and Maradona was their ringleader

Brilliant. I love the crescendo of desperate tackles building to the final assault.

"In goes Massing... Oh! and he is not going to get past that challenge"

:D

From another link, great to see the scores - one imagines much of the rest of the world went similarly nuts, except in Argentina of course.

Actually having watched that link again, what an outrageous foul by Lorenzo, for which he isnt even booked.
