Totp Rip

i saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on it a few mths ago, it was superb, million times better than Jools' take on music tv, i hope the Beeb plough their energies into putting on live music like that.

(i'm no big fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs it was just good TV)

Growing up in the 80's, it certainly seemed like that. When Irish television started showing TOTP, it became a stable feature for music-deprived kids.
The other outlet we had was Larry Gogans Irish Top 30 radio show on Sunday afternoons.
However, on clearer recollection, TOTPs' main purpose was to fill that musical void, but it was always a bit naff.
Remember Legs and Co? Even aged 10, I thought they were silly.
TOTP did however feature intriquing performances that when I actually had some money much later, I could explore further. Acts like Bauhaus, The Teardrop Explodes, The Associates, Japan, Sparks made a strong impression.
And pre-MTV, it was the only main opportunity to see music-videos.
The "gender ambiguity" thing was quite pronounced in Visages' "Fade to Grey", which I remember elicited peculiar reactions from my parents...

Ah yes...week upon week upon week of Joe Dolce being at number 1, while me, mum and bro shouted abuse at the TV, Rene and Renata providing hours of hysterical amusement, the first time we ever saw/heard 'Star Trekkin'...you can't buy memories like that.

Hoorah & Good riddance !

 A good thirty years too late !! A simply awful programme! God, the number of times I've sat through TOTP waiting for a glimpse of one decent band only to see them reduced to the level of Childrens TV guests !! ..................

"Thank you Pop Pickers ! That was the new one from Free & now, Liuetenant Pigeon !! "

The very essence of the early '80s pop experience. Ah, it could never be again. :(

Joe Dolce...Rene And Renato... Did you see that Justin Lee Collins thing the other week by any chance, 'Bring Back The One Hit Wonders'? Absolutely shocking! :D

I was looking through some fantastic clips on youtube last night :D Teardrop Explodes, the Cure, the Damned, very early Roxy music and the Adverts and even Tenpole Tudor :D

It's a sad there's one less music programme on TV, but even then I can't get sad about TOTP's demise... it was always pretty naff.

Any plans for a replacement, or is that basically it for BBC music telly?
They should let the BBC radio stations set up their own internet-based or digital-TV music video and live music TV channels. It would be a great format for new bands and they could use all their existing DJs etc to produce some great shows.

Fortunately/unfortunately I am allergic to Justin Lee Cuntrag so missed it. I do like a one hit wonder though, and I can also tell you that Rene and Renata played on -8 sounds rather fantastic.
