Toshiba TG01 slim smartphone launches

They're not trying very hard. They're just making phones that look like the iPhone but are otherwise exactly the same as other phones. Which people will buy and then think "hang on, this is the same as my old phone, oh well, I've signed the contract now".

Yep.

Thing is, there aren't that may ways you can make a slim, keyboard-less phone with a large screen without it looking like an iphone (or any similar devices that predate the iPhone).

However, there's still a fair few high end phones being made that don't look like the iPhone including, of course, the Palm Pre which sets the bar considerably higher IMO.

It annoys me because one of the hopes I always had about the iPhone was that the presence of something on an entirely new platform with a new UI would spur development of phones that people wanted to use, rather than just adding a bit more speed and a nicer screen and a faster processor every now and then. But it just hasn't. There's Android, which is great, more of that sort of thing please, but that's not purely spurred by the iPhone anyway, and the major phone companies are just sitting there saying "yeah what's so great about iPhones? look this one is black too! and it has a touch screen! and it plays videos! maybe if we release a few more that'll help".

It doesn't really matter what they look like. The iPhone just doesn't look like all the older phones out there, it's not in itself that innovative in terms of design.

The problem is that there are so many companies clearly thinking "let's release the same old phone with a few upgraded specs in a 'modern' way, er, make it look like the iphone".

Not many companies can match Apple's vast reservoirs of R&D cash, neither can they start off from the enviable position of having a near monopoly with iTunes/iPod, but I'd say there's an awful lot of innovation common on other smartphones that's yet to appear on the iphone.

For all its glitz, it's still miles behind on really basic functionality (video, MMS etc) as well as handy stuff like a decent camera, proper GPS etc, or some of the clever location/compass aware apps breaking through on Android.

Palm's multi tasking interface and 'synergy' functionality is already making Apple's UI look stale, so I'd say there's ample innovation going on outside of Apple.

You said, "Included a web browser that could be easily used on a small device." I'd say Opera managed that pretty well on big screen handsets. Even Netfront was pretty good on my old Palm.
Well, that and the massive, ne'er seen before screen - 800×480 pixels compared to the iPhone's 480×320 - and then creating a compelling mix of video recording, 3.5G, proper GPS, SD card slot, 5 megapixel camera, MMS, Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate and A2DP, video calling, cut and paste and FM radio.

What can the iPhone - with its admittedly far superior interface - match from that list? Anything?

Um, as I was pointing out I am talking about innovation, not features. There is a huge difference between the two.

Opera is a company all to itself so they may have innovated their browser but I've used it on many small platforms but its never come close to mobile Safari which Apple created specifically for the iPhone.

Creating an entire new OS for the phone they made is innovation.
Creating a new, gesture based UI for the phone they made is innovation.

These are abstract concepts created by thinking about a problem and coming up with solutions (innovating). These concepts will out live the technology they are implemented on.

Putting an off the shelf component into a phone isn't innovation, its just creating a product out of existing components. When that component becomes old its old.

I think 'stale' is taking it a bit far.

Palm is the only company so far to truly press the innovate button.

The iPhone has proper GPS. It will tell you to 1m where you are standing.

iPhone 3G finds your location via GPS or by triangulating your position using Wi-Fi and cellular towers.

can it run Tom Tom or do turn by turn directions?

Toshiba has released its official video for the TG01 phone. It sure is slim, but that daft revolving striped interface would soon get on my tits. The shale thing looks fun.

Elsewhere, LG are about to launch a phone with multitouch, so maybe Apple really have no claim to the technology - or they're going to take on everyone!

Tom Tom is a Sat Nav not GPS. The iPhone does not do proper Sat nav.

It does do turn by turn, it gives you directions in text and will compensate if you make a wrong turn. The map scrolls as you move. Unlike tom tom it does not do the 3d map and the *Bing* Take the next right turn. etc. If you are a passenger in a car then its pretty decent and removes the need for a map. Does require data access for the maps though, that is its achillies heel more than anything. There has been some discussion to the quality of the aerials.

I have a feeling that will either be in v3 of the software with a new phone or tom tom or whoever will release a fully packaged car kit for it so it can be used hands free.

Not trying very hard?! What utter tosh. Have you used the Touch HD? It's an incredible piece of kit. Worthy of standing next to the SE K750i and the Nokia 6310i in the 'best phones ever' hall of fame.

I can count the number of times I've been aware that it's based on the WM platform on one hand... everything can be done with the TouchFlo3D interface.

There isn't half some fanboi tosh on this thread.

According to Chrisfilters Facebook.. he's buying an iPhone today :D:D

I think I'd get the HTC Magic instead.

The HTC looks like a brick (and it's only for vodaphones).

Orange are offering the Toshiba at £175 on a £20/month contract. Too pricey for me, I'm looking at the LG GT505. Seems to do everything the Toshiba does, just not as quickly..

It looks like someone has force-fed an iPhone and then hit it repeatedly with the ugly stick.

Who buys these things...? Blind people...?

I know it makes me sick

I have now decided not to waste any more time or effort on the muppets. but I suppose 'they just want it to work'

I'll just write a dumbass app or make some retarded accessory and take a peace of the apple pie :D
