"Torture porn" - is that it?

I watched Saw last night and have to say 'meh'. I mean I was stoned and cynical, which is never a good state to watch a film for the first time, but I just found a lot of it very contrived.

I thought Saw was risible. A decent premise with an appalling script, apalling acting, appalling everything

What were you expecting? It's "torture porn". The clue is in the genre name... 'twas never gonna be oscar material.

sweet. thanks! i've seen the evil dead films recently but i found them more like comedies. i fucking loved them but they'e not scary really.

I always thought they _were_ comedies (well, I've not seen the first one). I didn't realise that there was moral panic about it until way after seeing 2.

The 3rd one is especially funny and less horror. 'Give some sugar baby':D

I've not seen the first one but apparently it's sarker, tree rape?

BTW I never expected to like films like Hostel, or want to watch them over again, but I do.

Is watching films like Hostel/Saw/ Wolf Creek any different to watching a horrific Zombie film?

When you guys talk about being "terrified" and "scared" by a film, do you really mean it? Like, genuinely scared?

I've never seen a film in my life that's scared me, it's just a film, it's not real, how on earth can it scare you

OK, things might look a bit icky, but any more than that? Nah.

Dunno about scared. the original of The Vanishing really freaked the fuck out of me, though.

I can think of two films that have freaked me out (Requiem For A Dream and Tetsuo) but I have a feeling that was more down to the fact I was tripping on LSD at the time, rather than the films themselves :D

yeh, well when you're tripping a bloody Care Bears movie could freak you out.

No, make that WOULD freak you out

I don't think I have ever really seen any of these torture porn films.

A few years ago, I saw a video of somebody being beheaded in Iraq. It was about 12 minutes long, it started off with him reading out a statement about the crimes of the west, a plea for his life, then some people came along and cut off his head with a saw.

On the other hand it's not going to autmaticly make the movie bad because some hack gave the "genre" a silly label.

Oh no, I agree. You just have to appreciate these movies for what they are - silly, misanthropic 90 minute diversions from reality.

I don't think the name is completely silly. Like real porn, these things have next to no plot, the acting is mostly crap, and the whole thing builds up to a "climax" (one of death, the other of spunk...). It does sort of make sense....

Hmmm... A film can unsettle you though. Rosemary's baby, Don't look now etc are not scary (at all really), but their unhinged realism leaves you feeling you've learned something? I'm not sure... Kind of like you've absorbed a bit of the mentalness.

You need good actors though, and watching Saw last night just had me cracking up; 'h...h... honey, it's ok'. :D

a lot of the italian stuff released in the early 80s was much more repulsive and sadistic than anything like hostel or saw - check out umberto lenzi or ruggero deodatos films if you want to see something really depraved

you can't take them seriously though, they've got ridiculous electro funk sound tracks and the worst scripts and plots ever!

dunno, i think some of them a pretty good. admittedly most are very trashy, but i'd rather watch them than the new wave of horror films of late

I don't think they were.

Many of them are terrible, but a few are great - Suspiria and Tenebrae are excellent and Zombie Flesh Eaters (or Zombi 2) is rather good. The soundtracks are often better than the films is some cases though, such as City Of The Living Dead
