Tortoise house guest.

how many did you have zenie and what were they called?
I want a tortoise!

But I won't get one - I think I'd be a bad mother at the moment.

I had two Mork and Mindy, Mindy died and then Mork was fine til he excaped while in his oudoor enclosure  :(

We found his shell at the back of the garden last year. Think the cold probably got to him when he tried to hibernate under a rock. :hmm::(

They're great fun but I'd want a garden or know that I'd be getting one! :)

Lovely, lovely creatures.

I definitely does want one.

Although when I was tortoise-sitting years back, the little bugger mainly just pissed on me whenever I tried holding it. They don't like being perched on a shoulder, that's for sure :(

Archie, after his initial fretfulness, has now become very lethargic.
He only came out a few times yesterday and pretty much fell asleep straight away.

Fickle little sod.

:)

He came back to visit on Sunday and staying till Friday!! :D

He is a lot bigger.

We shared lunch today, baby spinach, rocket, peppers, watercress, apple, although he didn't have any pitta bread or houmous :)

He has been pretty sleepy today but had a little run into the kitchen about 20 mins ago.

Yay for Archie!

I do love a tortoise! Mine used to mistake my painted toenails for strawberries and attack my feet :D

I think its just a naked toes thing.

Archie has gone for mine a few times and a few other guests much to their surprise

my sister used to have a tortoise, not sure if she still has it, my mum was terrified of it, my sister went on holiday and asked mum to pop around and feed it, just cut up some peaches(i think) for the little thing - mum was so frightened she just chucked the peaches in whole, and ran off :D the poor thing couldn't eat them, luckily my sister wasn't gone for too long

yay for tortoises!

shouldn't he be hibernating though like on blue peter? or was that just an excuse they used when one of theirs died :hmm:

oh yes - our tortoise has it's address painted on its shell as it runs away all the time. they are flipping speedy when they get going.

^ this is a good idea!

i worked at a sports ground once and nearly ran a tortoise over with the tractor & gang mowers while cutting the grass

i picked him up and walked around loads of houses on the adjacent estate knocking on doors till i found his owner :)

that happened to my mate's tortoise, except they did run over him and took the top off his shell, like a boiled egg. They had him patched up with fibreglass and changed his name to Crackpot!

The comments about them being quite fast movers rings a bell with me. I knew someone who was looking after a tortoise while its owners were on holiday a few years back. The thing would wizz about quite surprisingly quickly. I was amazed. Perhaps they were feeding it on Rocket I don't know.

nooooo poor l'il archie. :(

There is a horrible flu like thing going round though called the herpes virus, it takes ages to show up and even quarantine isn't long enough for it to show. http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/herpes.html

Have they got a good vet who specialises in tortoises?

PM me if you'd like my friend's number, she has tonnes of experience with tortoises, breeds and nurses them etc.

Sadly he has been seen by a reptile vet and has some internal bleeding. The vet does not hold out much hope at all. I was surprised how much (even a wuss like me) it upset me yesterday.

Jesus, how the fuck did that happen? :(

Tortoises can be so tempremental!

I really want another one or two, for my sins!

how much does a tortoise set you back then?

Depends what type you want and how old it is.

UK captive bred hatchlings and juvenilles (under 3) hermannis like Archie are anything between 90 and 150 quid. Then they need a tortoise table, heat and UV lamps, plus plants and substrate like bark chippings. :)
