Torrents - what am I doing wrong?

And again in english please? :D

Its in the router somewhere, you can get the DSL line statistics, but how you do that is different for every single model of router, so you just have to nose about. Somewhere in there it will say something like

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3394 kbps 1047 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 4 db 5 db

It may be obvious stuff to the ubergeeks of U75 but the port forwarding stuff is quite complicated for people with no technical knowledge. It's strange that there isn't software to set this up easily - is there a reason it's difficult to do? The first company to create torrent software that you can just download and use will become very popular I reckon.

The 8Mps is between you and Virgins/BT equipment in the exchange, thats all. It has nothing to do with how well Virgin connect to the rest of the internet (peered).

If Virgin have a 1Mbs line to the internet your going to get that shared between all their customers. This is the main reason for the 8Mbs speed being quite the most misleading headline figure for a broadband connection.

Its a tick box in the setting of the software that needs it, but due to it being a security risk, its off by default.

Ah right :)

Methinks I'll be looking at changing to this Be internet then, should it be a fairly painless process?

leaving virgin theroetically should be but I bet they play fuckers - but we aren't on a contract so cancelling the DD should work :D

you have the account details to set a new one up :)

You need to ring Virgin to get the Mac code from them to give to Be*.

Best to put an order in to Bethere 1st. Should be available but your exchange might be full etc etc.

Have you port forwarded the port as UDP too? That helps get the swarm. Make sure you do this on your router and your personal firewall.

If that doesn't help then you're probably d/ling from a bunch of dial-ups.
There's lots of other tweaks than can be done though and make sure you only upload 60-80% capacity. Are you getting a smiley green face from your downloads?

Doesn't help much if this is going on..

The stats for my current download are:

Seeds - 17(62)
Peers - 8(164)
Down Speed - 8.4kb/sec
Up Speed - 32.5kb/sec
Ratio - 0.961
Avail - 23.996

1 - What does all that mean?
2 - Do those numbers sound about right, or a bit odd?

Seeds - 17(62) Number of people who have the complete file and are upload or sharing it
Peers - 8(164) Number of people who have partial file/s and are uploading it but also downloading it some of which you might have some of which you might have a 'bit' of it but not the whole thing.
Down Speed - 8.4kb/sec download speed (set this to a max of 125 kbs)
Up Speed - 32.5kb/sec upload speed (set this to around 7 to 15 kbs that way it's uploading but the contention and bandwidth useage isn't astronomical.

Ratio - 0.961 Amount downloaded v's the amount uploaded
Avail - 23.996 Number of slots or queing places avaialbe. ( i think)

Dodgy fuckers. No ISP seems to realise that if you sell 8mb down and 1mb up then that's what the customer should get 24/7!.

If you're actually selling a 30mb line to 20 people then you're telling lies.

That page is full of it. 'using your fair share' - I'm paying for 8mb/1mb - If I want to use it 100% of the time then that's my prerogative.

I'd leave, Bees.

i'm pretty sure that sooner or later virgin and all the others are goign to end up at the OFT and forced to change their speed advertisements and also their package names to reflect what they are providing.

tbh i'm thinking of saying sod it atm and getting a commercial connection which I can guarentee my access speeds and get better upload speeds...
