I had to kill ZA free and get an "evaluation" version of the full package to get torrents to work. I couldn't get ZA free to unblock the torrent ports and the only advice I could find was to ditch it.

I periodically boost my Oink ratio by raiding FLAC newsgroups for albums and uploading whatever isn't on Oink up there, that seems to work a treat for me.

Nope, he didn't even upload anything. He must just have a mega-super-dooper connection. Either that or he spent loads of time grabbing the really popular stuff just for the sake of it when it was first put up.

The only reason I got my own ratio above 1 was that over Christmas they had a 'leechfest' where you could dl whatever you wanted, and it wouldn't affect your ratio adversely, but whatever was uploaded would still be counted. So I just kept grabbing all the things with loads of leechers. Before that I struggled to get it over about 0.5.

If it hadn't been for the bastarding earthquake halfway through, I would have a ratio of about 2 by now.

That was a nice week - my ratio went from .6 to 1.8.

One trick with Oink is to keep seeding your files forever or at least they are deleted from the tracker (I give them a label in Azeurus, then I don't have to look at them). Someone somewhere will hopefullly grab it from you. Also if you have a good download speed then grab stuff with lots of leechers but not many seeds - you'll get it quickly and can then seed. Don't grab big files - flacs will fuck your ratio pretty quick.

e2a - not that any of the above has helped that much - my ratio is 1.3 now

These days you need to specify your ISP as lots do traffic shaping and in the case of PlusNet have a firewall as well. Some don't even allow P2P, depending on what you are paying.

These need to be taken into consideration. uPnP does work well I find, so you shouldn't need to configure your router unless uPnP is broken.
