Tories advocate living wage, not minimum wage

Tories were opposed to the minimum wage beacuse its not allowing the market to find its own 'realistic' wage level. According to them this means that employers can keep wage costs down thereby generatiing greater profits and creating more jobs which grows the economy to eveyones benefit.

What actually happens is that people are paid as little as employers can get away with, they make bigger profits - but it only benefits the wealthy who get ever richer whilst those at the bottom get fucked in the 'race to the bottom'.

The minimum wage should be raised to the point where you dont need fmaily tax allownace (whihc is effectively an expensive and beaurocratic subsidy for lwo paying employers) . In addition benefti levels should be raised from their present punishingly low levels and people should be allwoed to earn up to - say - £50 without it affecting what they receive in benefits.

At present you can earn £5. The same ludicoursly low amount it was in 1983FfS!

Good post, and I totally agree about the last. The government doesn't seem to understand that for many people part time work is a necessary transition into full time work and needs to be paid accordingly.

i would support a living wage if it was higher than the minimum wage but what the Tories will do to other tax/allowances may make life worst.

10 years of New Labour is really hitting working people. Just read a blog on Newsnight trip aka Orwell Road to Wigan Pier it is being shown the Friday. It tells a story of recession, loads of people either unemployed or working on very low wage jobs.

The kind of story that gets little media space. Times are hard and getting harder in UK plc.

"Before anybody accuses me of wanting to impose poverty wages, let me emphasise that I am talking about arrangements for freely consenting adults."

What a fucking wanker. I have a very deep and profound hatred for such "people".

The right to be paid less money is clearly a very important one!

Bloody obvious this was going to happen, though.

I'm so glad someone has pointed this out. I was on benefits for the last few months for the first time ever. I admit I had no real idea how the system worked.

I really wanted to work so managed to get the offer of a few shifts in my local pub.

I spoke to the benefits office and said 'If I only work 12hours a week for a few weeks, will I still get any benefits', then they mentioned the £5 limit.

I was completely lost for words. I stayed on the dole.
