Tor - What is it used for?

I would put nothing at all below the craven crew that infest Westminster. Heck, they launched an aggressive war on the back of a pack of lies, and now pretend to be the protectors of the people, all the while stripping us of our defences. Our defences against them, that is.

Funnily enough, al Qaida does not seem to bother even with disk encryption. Do you remember the story of the USian who bought a laptop in Kabul souk, only to find it crammed with all sorts of, ahh, info for guerillistas? But when it comes to communications specifically, the usual techniques of organised crime are, of course, available to the alq mob.

The situation reminds me of DRM in that DRM does nothing to slow down criminals -- it's only the honest consumer who cops the grief. Similarly, mobsters have reliable ways of ensuring privacy and anonymity. And these ways -- being illegal already -- are hardly likely to be made less effective by more laws. It's only the honest citizen whose privacy is invaded.

There's a strong case that to outlaw the technologies of privacy on the 'net would only aid mobsters and fraudsters. Such laws would merely ensure the public is unprotected and that it would remain vulnerable.
