Top Ten reggae LPs

incidently currently listening to joe gibbs and the proffesionals"no bones for the dogs"anyone got any of his "african dub lps?"

good another brit reggae lp i rate is macka b "sign of the times"lp on mad proffs "ariwa"label

I almost bought this last week - is it that good? If so I may pick it up tonight. I have about 3 or 4 Macka B albums anyway so I decided not to buy it. Mad Professor meets Pato Banton is one of my favourites, but I only have the sleeve nowadays:(. I did manage to find MAd Prof recaptures Pato but it's not as good.

At the risk of thread-wide derision - and in no particular order these are my favourites that spring to mind:

Sly & Robbie - Taxi Connection
UB40 - Signing Off
Gregory Isaacs - Night Nurse
Lee Perry - Time Boom

Will be mining Soulseek on the back of this thread later in the week.

My favourite reggae tune at the moment is Bruce Ruffin - John & Judith, but I can't find it anywhere to download.

Funnily enough I listened to Sign of the Times on saturday after digging my old vinyl out of the loft. Macka B is kind of great and kind of crap at the same time :D

In-Veh-Shon!

My favourite is Indian Girl - off the other Album - which treads the fine line between great dub and questionable lyrical content.

We've had enough with Big Mac on it, "I ain't gonna eat no Big Mac", I have natural suntan and looks are deceiving too and I bought Sign of the times on vinyl last night, haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I think I have enough Macka B now.

There's a good record shop in Seven Sisters with lots of reggae vinyl at ok prices.

I'm a huge fan of the roots pre-digital Jammys stuff, so the Pressure Sounds collection "The Crowning of Prince Jammy" and also "King Jammy In Roots" from Auralux do it for me.

For that period of the 80's when Jammys ruled the dancehall there's a great 4 volume CD set to be had:

King Jammy - Selectors Choice

Or for a more concise collection (of which you might already have a lot of):

King At The Controls

Lee Perry - Time Boom

I especially like those first two, Ini Kamoze and Half Pint give great performances on Taxi Connection.

My enthusiasm for the later stuff by Lee Perry and Adrian Sherwood has seriously waned over recent years, although I listened to Time X Boom a lot about 15 years ago. I only really listen to their 70's roots productions now, just about everything on Sherwood's Hit Run label goes for silly money these days.

My list has been mostly covered by El Jeffe and Ringo, but until yesterday I hadn't heard Bob Andy's Songbook. On first listening I think it'll definitely find a place in upper reaches of my top ten

the amount of crossover in the top 10s is interesting. I guess as ringo said at the outset, it's primarily a 7"medium (or used to be) and if I recall correctly, albums were often aimed at foreign markets rather than domestically anyway. So I guess that explains why there's so much agreement about what the truly classic albums are.

There was one on Maximum pressure too I think, only 3 or 4 releases on that label and they were all great, Winston Riley Productions - Dancehall Techniques 86-91, Rough Inna Town - The X-Terminator Sound and Flag Flown High - Best of Bobby Digital.

The Xterminator is my favourite, have you heard the dub CD they put out? By far the only dub worth listening to come out of Jamaica from the 90's.

Winston Riley doesn't get the attention he deserves, not only was he in the Techniques, one of the finest three part harmony groups ever to grace a recording studio, but his Techniques label has been knocking out top notch hits for decades. Couple of great Pressue Sounds (again) compilations, especially the Roots Techniques LP, which are so good I've been trying to get most of the tracks therein in original 45 since it's release.

It's an incredible set, worth the money for Unchained alone but not a weak track there.

Anyone see him at the Lambeth Country Show in 2004? Still the consummate professional, blew everybody else off the stage:

I bought the Xterminator one twice because I lost one of the vinyl of my first copy. Haven't heard the dub CD but then I don't really buy CDs. Yeah I have the Roots Techniques LP, great stuff was listening to it recently as it goes. Pressure sounds are great but haven't got as much as I should.

I think it was you who got me on to the rough guide to reggae book which has essential albums in it.

No one's mentioned Tenor Saw's Fever yet - another LP I've lost!!!

I was thinking the other day: I need to build up my roots collection, but I don't know where to start. This thread is perfect, thanks all.

9. Lee Scratch Perry - Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Cornbread

I used to have that - but the cover edited out the "collie weed" bit... why do they do daft things like that? :D

This thread has prompted a soulseek frenzy.
