:p :D

MC Miker G and DJ Sven's 'Holiday Rap'.. no need for the other 9 albums.

I heard MC Miker G has hooked up with Necro for a remiiiiiiix :p

10 - Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
09 - Main Source - Breakin' Atoms
08 - Gangstarr - Step Into The Arena
07 - EPMD - Strictly Buisness.
06 - Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
05 - Schoolly D - Schoolly D
04 - Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beat Down
03 - Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show
02 - NWA - Straight Out Of Compton
01 - Hijack - The Horns Of Jericho

Anyone mentioned Infamous - Mobb Deep?

And m&m!?!? - OP is having a laugh :D

edit: like others...

NWA - staight outta Compton has to be there.

As does Nation of Millions - PE.

Ice Cube - Amerikka's.

ICe T - The Iceberg.

And I to like the self-titled Cypress Hill album.

Bizzare ride II the Pharcyde

Slightly newer stuff - Octagaenacologist (sp?) (Dr Octogon)

I've also got lots of WuTnag/ODB/methodman/rza/gza stuff but wouldn't rate it as "all time"

I would put People's Instinctive Travels for Tribe Called Quest well above Low End. Likewise I would put Ice T Original Gangster well above any of his other stuff.

3feet High and Rising was novel - but IMO their albums have got better and better eclipsing that first one.

Low End Theory has a much more dark tone to it than People's travels, plus I really hate Can I Kick It and Bonita Applebum....Well not hate exactly, but if I never heard them again I wouldn't be too upset. ;)

Bits of every album are good, but they're heavily derivative. I kind of toyed with putting 'Liquid Swords' in - the best produced and most distinct of the albums imo.

The Wu Tang made a great initial impact with their first album then spent a little too long going round in ever decreasing circles. Shit live as well - they seem to have pissed any legacy they had up the wall.

I loved the Daisy Age era at the time as well - I still fondly remember De La's first tour - but they also kind of fizzled out in terms of influence. I found myself putting down Midnite Marauders, the most enjoyable of that school of albums, as a nod to the era.

Idaho's got a point about Ice T though. I used to listen to his albums as much as anyone as a kid (and stare at his impressive wife on the album covers) - and I reckon I'd have to find a way for him to be on the list somehow. He helped define that whole OG OTT era and set the scene for the other West Coast crews...

:)

Wu Tang and the like

Yeah - liquid swords is cool - the whole martial arts thing with the samauri story was well novel at the time.

36 chambers had some novel stuff too - kinda appealing to the people who like a good tune: C.R.E.A.M. and Simple stand out for me.

Plus Ghostface Killer's Ironman spin-off was one of my most listened to at one point.

Method Man Tical continued with the tune theme with the Survive sample.

And ODB: Shimmy.

Good tunes but a lot of fillers in between.

Not even close, for me. Low End Theory is among my favourite records of any genre.

3feet High and Rising was novel - but IMO their albums have got better and better eclipsing that first one.

I'd agree with this, though.

:)

Defo, De la soul is dead is my favourite LP of theirs, much better than the cheesefest of 3 feet high & rising.

Another LP I forgot to mention is Tougher than Leather by Run DMC, a stone cold classic! :)

Sounded great at the time though. Had a real impact across the scene, which I'm not sure you could say about De La's later albums.

Time hasn't been that kind to it I'll admit...

I still like it, but I don't play it very much anymore. I'm more likely to play just a few tracks on it, or one of their other albums.

Granted for impact it is well up there. However Balloonymindstate, Stakes is High and the AII trilogy are so much more deeper and accomplished.

What do people think of Common? I have a couple of albums - Like water for chocolate has some excellent tracks on it, real classics, but like so many hip hop albums is uncohesive and very patchy.

Which classic album did you have in mind?
OK, the Furious 5 were really a singles act but they could've put a greatest hits package in there.

No one mention the The Neptunes
The best album they're responsible for is Kelis' "Kaleidoscope" which can't be described as hip-hop. Plus I think they're dwarfed by their Virginia colleagues Missy and Timbaland, although it's hard to pick which is her best album.

On the Wu, all of the RZA, GZA, Ghost, Meth, Raekwon and ODB have great albums under their belt but most folk will have different favourites. This maybe resulted in a split vote and hence "Enter...." is lower than it might otherwise be. My favourite Wu solo albums are "Tical" and the "Ghost Dog OST".

Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet
London Posse - Gangster Chronicle
Hijack - The Horns Of Jericho
Gunshot - Patriot Games
The Goats - Tricks Of The Shade
Gravediggaz - Niggamortis
New Flesh For Old - Equilibrium
Nephlim Modulation Systems - Woe To Thee O Land Whose King Is A Child
Airborn Audio - Good Fortune
Viktor Vaughn - Venomous Villain

And they stack up like this:

1. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions
2. Jungle Brothers - Done By The Forces Of Nature
3. Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
4. Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet
5. Diamond D and the Psychotic Neurotics - Stunts Blunts and Hip Hop
6. A Tribe Called Quest - Beats Rhymes and Life
7. Capone n Noreaga - The War Report
8. Hijack - Horns Of Jericho
9. Klashnekoff - Sagas Of
10. Wu Tang Clan - Enter The 36 Chambers

With about 20 more at equal eleventh. Top tens are so constraining.

Nas - Illmatic
Nas - It Was Written
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the 36 chambers
GZA - Liquid swords
Big L - Lifestylez ov da poor and dangerous
DITC - Live at the Tramps vol.2 (not really an album though)
Biggie - Ready to Die
Main Source - Breaking Atoms
AZ - Do or Die
Cormega - The Realness

Can't decide an order
