Top 100 UK singles 1996

That's my single crumb of comfort. And you would want to take it away from me?

Anyway, you're wrong. Listening to it now and it still sounds great.

It wouldn't even make my top 10 new order tracks. It's one of those articles of faith everyone 'has' to like despite its awful vocals, dreary lyrics and general plodding. But hey enjoy.

I like the vocals. Lyrics are dreary, I'll give you that, but New Order's lyrics are never up to much. And it doesn't plod. It builds.

Partly it's the difference between a dance record and a pop record. Blue Monday only makes any sense when you dance to it. But it doesn't get near something like 'Two Tribes' remixed or 'How Soon is Now' for an 80's listening experience.

1981 - ghost town and tainted love at nos 3 and 4 - two of the greatest pop singles ever. a fair smattering of classics in the rest of the list. Take that 1996. and compare with the list for 1988 for an illustration of how bad it got as the 80s dragged on.

1990: The KLF, Happy Mondays, They Might Be Giants and, at a push, The Charlatans stand out from the list.

A surprising number of "mega mixes" in the charts that year.

Also the terrible stuff in 1981 is spectacularly terrible- Julio Iglesias and the Birdy Song, Stars on 45, The Oldest Swinger in Town...

Part of what was extraordinary about that time - the clash of the spiky, bizarre, radical, subversive and confrontational with the likes of the goombay dance band and Terry Wogan. And 1981 was the year when you had loony tunes level of gooey hysteria over Chas an Di's wedding whilst simultaneously every major city saw massive riots. In the case of Toxteth - on the same day.

Couldn't bear the Oldest Swinger in Town back then when I was being a sulky faced Killing Joke fan. But I heard it the other day and it's quite funny.

I saw Killing Joke last year, didn't laugh once and they gave me tinnitus.

Am I just getting nostalgic for when I was 17 or is the the best annual singles chart ever? How many other years would feature such a small proportion of dreadful tracks?

Top 100 1996 - UK Music Charts
Wow the 90s really sucked.

"Come on Eileen" - the most awful thing to come out of the 80's, scourge of 80's revivals, cancer of 80's disco nights, the turd in the punch bowl that every fucking DJ sticks on at some point - I loathe that fucking song.
I have always thought the same. weddings, shit discos, even at the time. You know what though, it sounds tottaly fine in the context of the album, and it's a damn fine album.
