I reckon most top 100s of most years are gonna be shit, even when from when current music actually mattered to you. You did get a better class of record getting high up the charts in a way that would be simply impossible now - Reward reaching number one, Kings of the Wild Frontier reaching two - but even in what I think of as the golden age, I.e. early-mid 80s, I bet if I looked it'd be littered with some utter fucking arse.

A great song has just enough surprise to take you out of your expectations, but not so far that the listener has no frame of reference. There is one element of surprise in Wannabe, I'll give it that: the amazement I feel that the song writer had the brass neck to present it as a finished piece of work.
