Tooting news, rumours, chat, things to do

Tooting market has been sufficiently gentrified that new visitors can enjoy it while thinking it's all authentic and stuff. And it's close to a Primark.

Get her eyebrows threaded. It's very cheap round Tooting.

Got to Merton Abbey Mills. Merton Abbey Mills | Eat | Drink | Shop | Play

While there she can also go to a massive Sainsburys M&S, Dunelm Mills and a Yates Lodge.
Lol. She can do similar things in Stirling. (Where eyebrow threading is cheap, there's a big Sainsbury, and so on).

I was hoping for something a bit more hip (without being hipster).

but lets be honest, a fading 'craft' market (albeit with a fascinating history), a Lido in the rain and a few retail opportunities is just about all there is in Tooting for tourists :)

e2a but the sweets are a must!

If she's a hardy soul then a swim in Tooting Bec Lido - second biggest outdoor pool in Europe or something. It's raining at the moment mind you.

Have you ever been it it? It's fucking freezing. I'm not discounting the fact I'm a whimp and don't like being cold.

Been once many years ago. It's popular in the summer.
I had a friend 20 years older than me that had a swim in the lido first thing every morning, whatever the weather. She much preferred going there in the winter for the very reason you mention.

I mentioned Citizen Smith as soon as she said she was going to Tooting. She gave me a pitying look that implied "one of your prehistoric references". It made me feel old.
bah. Think of the pitying look if there was a suggestion of going to look at Amen Corner.

it's a road junction btw.

Bear in mind I left South London five years ago but in 2013 Radha Krishna Bhavan, Sree Krishna (Keralan South Indian) and Jaffna House (Sri Lankan) were always reliably good. Sadly she's too late for the much lamented Kastoori.

Down in South Wimbledon there's the Trafalgar Free House, a proper old fashioned place that is drinking pretty much literally in someone's front room. Not that hip though.

My dentist is in tooting, if she needs a checkup.

But more seriously, if she happens to like Reggae Music, I think Channel One still do a lot of stuff at the Tramshed. You've also got the common, and if you're so inclined the sewing machine museum, as well as the Lido.

Mirch Masala is the best curry house. Don't listen to anyone else!

Mirch Masala is lovely. But it's Keralan/South Indian/Sri Lankan food that makes Tooting distinctive and unusual, and Mirch Masala isn't that. (Plus the best Mirch Masala branch isn't in Tooting)

Went to Chutney & Dosa recently and it wasn't all that (apart from the dosas). Wasn't BYOB either, which is the clincher for me)
