Too old for CELTA?

Yeah - I think isitme's thinking TEFL jobs. Fully qualified teachers can get much more money in much nicer locations if they've got the PGCE. Mind you location is everything - my mate makes about 1500 quid a month in Thailand at a British School, he could double his money in Shanghai but he says Thailand's just so much better so he ain't budging...

Yes, that's what I'm talking about too. There are some excellently paid TEFL jobs in that part of the world if you can stomach it.

Agreed. I was just pointing out to him that the the fully qualified can get much better money in much more desirable locations... Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, particularly places that used to be British - HK as well, India. Would have loved to have worked in India.

Furthermore, the majority of qualified British teachers don't seem to know this. I guess it's because they decided to become teachers so they could teach in Britain, rather than the burning desire to go and live in Asia, but during my PGCE, the question even came up of the NQT year, and I said, couldn't you do it at a British School in China, and they said absolutely not, it has to be a school in the British system. I tried explaining that these schools were super dooper posh schools for UK expat children, and that they very much operated in the British system, but the people weren't having any of it.

i spose if they are training you and all that they expect you to at least put some teaching into our fucked up schools....

it is tempting to do a PGCE and then go and be rich in thailand. i feel rich here earning a lot less than that right now, i dunno if i'd be comfortable being proper rich rich tho :hmm:

yeah, tbf I think it's completely fair that when you get paid a quite decent amount to train, that you should do the NQT year in the UK. What I mean though is that there are a lot of teachers who don't seem to be aware that they can earn very nice money, pretty much anywhere in the world, with their qualified teacher qualifications. I'm thinking of the many you read about who are sick of pay etc.

Ah well, I didn't qualify, so I will stop thinking of that...

You've fallen on your feet with 8000 for a first job, that's pretty good :)
