too much bike choice :(

I've finally broken off my "relationship" with my regular bike shop.
I had always dreaded having to take my bike in there

It's now been tarted up as a Specialized "Concept Shop" and it has an even scarier than previously number of very young staff and multi-thousand pound bikes.

I always go to the Raleigh shop at the bottom of Stokes Croft, although now I have free servicing for life I'll have to start taking it to Bike in Clifton (where I got it from).

I ordered a shedload of bits for my bike yesterday - tyres, brakes, front changer, rear jockeys, new saddle. A proper size helmet should be heading my way too. £125 all-in.

I reckon I have enough rim on the front wheel to see me out at least a year or two - at which point a £40 wheel should do the job.

I certainly noticed the difference with the graunched-up shocks yesterday so will tentatively be slackening them off a turn before I set out later.

funny you should mention that, cos my bikes are actally stored in the bog/bathroom.

Not sure what your getting at tho - OCD joke, or is there something hazardous along the lines of taking a slash after chopping chillies?

carcinogenic and absorbed through skin, and pass straight through latex gloves. apparently old railway engineers used to carry a rag to open doors with to stop their hands getting greasy, problem was they'd put the rag in their pocket- right next to the part of the anatomy most affected by carcinogens. :(

heavy grease is quite carcinogenic and will absorb through the skin and will penetrate clothing. you don't want traces winding up on your tackle as they are most susceptible to cancer making thingies. :)

thanks for the links, will read up later. :)

eta: after going to work in a bicycle workshop :hmm:

what sort of gloves do you wear, is vinyl any use?

note to self: have a good wank *before* tinkering with bikes!

I'll certainly be careful when handling synthetic oils.

http://www.green-oil.net is a decent enough chain-lube (probably what we get most exposure to) Its apparently just made from plants. You might have to apply a bit more frequently, otherwise its gotten surprisingly good reviews.

Looks like theyve got a grease out as well, but i havent heard about that before.

i *think* vinyl should be okay- latex pretty much burns on contact though

we actually use exclusively green-oil on chains now and my experience is that it works much much better than PTFE based stuff. :)

Its not arriving till friday now.

Riding position should be ok, rode plenty of chops with big bars and they're suprisingly comfortable.

First time i'll have tried a bicycle with ape hangers though.

If it doesn't work out, i'll just change the bars.

It was a bargain on Ebay.

You may mock, but...

"Many Nottingham people today have happy memories of the Old Market Square. It has been used for fairgrounds, festivals, protest rallies and even a temporary beach as the Square was transformed for Nottingham-by-the-Sea"

;)

I was revved up tonight. Had an extended lunch break and got my bike in the office - I've now got a seat without sharp holes, a kickstand, and 3 front cogs.
I wish I'd coughed up £8 for a new SRAM front derailer earlier.
I have a pair of tyres and 3 changes of brakes ....

Just waiting for my new jockey pulleys.

I have to send the helmet back - they sent the wrong one.

I have my eye on a particular kind of RN-issue blue goretex coat ...

And the new 3.5 watt rear light is a great success. I plan to try it alongside the 21 watt car lamp I used to use on the back ...
.

too much choice indeed!

got to choose a bike from the scheme soon
i commute about 2 miles each day, quickly
and burn about on the weekend and some evenings
nearly 40 but still got a bit of bmx in me :D
the disc brakes on the bike in work were a bit abrupt and scared me a bit but i could get used to it

been looking at these and a few others under £500

any thoughts?

Simple custom bikes, web videos, 'scene' riders meeting in different cities to take over the streets for a day and some people doing tricks (which I personally think is lame as fuck tbh).

There's a fair bit in common with BMX

i guess, if that's what bmx means to you. for me it was/is always about pedaling like fuck at whatever obstacle was in your way. but then i still ride, so what would i know?

Thats not what BMX means to me at all. I may not ride anymore but still very much in touch with what goes on....and I don't mean scooter bikes, ramp rats and flair to footjams either. Where do you ride?

I was pointing out what things they have in common. Pedalling like fuck seems to be one of those things too. :)

ETA: Is it Keith Dooley?

i was just being a cunt - ignore me

mostly at this little clone park near me, and stockwell when i can be arsed

nope -who he?

No bother.

He's an old racer, when you said you liked pedalling fast at stuff I just wondered.

Been out here today, track in Crewe some mates are nearly finished building.
