Too many people seem to forget how World Cups work

Winning a friendly with two late goals?. Bless.

Northern Ireland, away in Spain...

You asked for examples, I gave you two. I like the way you emphasise the friendly part because Argentina lost eh considering the game isn't treated as such by either side and then use another friendly to back your point up.

Can you tell me who does have bottle? Only every single team in the tournament seem to have lost en route to the Finals.

How can you draw a parralel between what happened in say 1982 with now when every single team is different .

He only says that to emphasise that it's ridiculous to make assumptions about what's going to happen on the basis of one or two games. History has shown time and again that there's more to it than that.

The Czechs and Italians are doing their bit.

Now the next part should be England winning on Tuesday.

But he's neglecting to mention that history also shows some teams start crap and finish crap , I accepted it's stupid to say Argentina will definatly win based on 2 games but to draw a parralel with other world cups and ignoring datat that doesn't fit into the his idea of "how the world cup works" is just as stupid . England may improve as the tournamnet goes on but if I were to say on current form Argentina will definatly win the world cup I'm not making a ridiculous assumption because I have qualified my statement to ignore teams improving throughout the tournament . Which is the what I assume people mean when they say "argentina will definatly win the world cup " only they haven't added the "on current form" bit to qualify the statement .

Argentina do look good, very good though this thread is spot on...they could have peaked to early, they could have a shocker in the second round. You only have to think of the last Euros and Champions league when the pool won to see that in a cup competition anything can happen...

No, it was the way they lost, two late sucker goals don't make a performance - or maybe they do for you.

There's more to a game of football than losing/winning, It's the performance. ;)

Every four years the same thing happen. Some teams start straight out the blocks, some teams start slowly or barely get started. Some teams start well then bottle it when it matters.

So why do people feel they are on such solid ground when they say 'Argentina will definitely win it, Brazil are finished, England will lose in the last 16, Spain look really good this year - they're bound to do something now' when the history of the competition shows at least 3 out of those 4 will probably be proved wrong.
