Tonight's Later... With Jools Holland.

On the strength of seeing the Spinto band on Later I went out and bought the album , its bit samey but I quite like it , but then again I remember saying I quite liked the Magic Numbers and getting slaughtered so WTF do I know ?

Dubby are there any bands you actualy like?

pearl jam are a good band.
ok they don't super produce every mistake out of there music, they play with feeling, something you plainly have no clue about drubby.

go and post on a fucking abba site or something........

i thought rodrgio y gabriela and camille were great last night

we are scientists were shit, and are shit :)

long time no see, fucko.

no, you're right, i hate everything. The 4 or 5 gigs a month i go to, the 200gbs of mp3s, the 4000 albums, the 3000 CDs - all blank.

it pains me so :(

Aye. That show was bloody embarassing - the likes of a drugged up Ashcroft and We Are Scientists supposedly representing British/US music, and completely outclassed by everything else, including a 'Hasidic Jewish reggae rapper' and a lass with an acoustic guitar  :D

Had the Camille album (Le Fil) for ages - it's as bonkers as what you saw, but I really like it. Just don't try to translate the lyrics like I did for my French dossier - one, it's impossible, and two, they make so little sense it can only spoil it :o

Got the Rodrigo y Gabriela album today and that's great too. Some really kick arse - there's quite a cleverly different cover of Stairway to Heaven on it too.

I liked the "Jewish reggae" guy and especially Camille. :)

I sometimes wonder tho' if I end up watching stuff on the show that I usually wouldn't bother listening to simply because of the pictures, and since I typically watch on my PC whiole simultaneously browsing something else (and hence not really *watching*) I end up wondering if I am being suckered into listening to what amounts to a mediocre radio show.

I usually watch each week because of the occasional jems that pop up...

...but in fact I think we could do with several themed music shows rather than the current rag-bag.

Is it my imagination but are there less decent music shows on the TV than in years gone by? I suppose E4 and E4+1 make up for it slightly with their morning music programming, but IMO we could do with some decent programmes to supplement Jools off-and-on Friday nights and the rubbish Saturday morning kids stuff.

There are tons of BBC radio DJs who could put together good genre-based TV shows.

Most of it is mediocre tbh, and as my flatmate pointed out, it's deliberately biased that way - I thought they'd put Camille on again at the end, and he said, 'no, it's always the shit stuff they show more' which is obviously right.

I was thinking that too. Do you remember the late night Channel 4 music show they used to do, before digital? It was hosted by Jo Whiley and had a fair bit of different stuff on it. Despite her tendencies to make everything a bit NME-style 'like it because we're told to', it was pretty good. Had a cartoon on it called House of Rock and a bit of varied stuff like that. Maybe I just have unrealistically good memories of it! After that, I can't remember any other good regular music shows.

We were having chat last night about this topic, and we decided that actually, the majority do not want to hear new music, they WANT, to hear the same old same old.

why? we couldn't decide, lack of imagination? need to feel safe? one friend actually admitted that he only listens to songs that remind him of a good memory, and so would only put on a song when he wants to remember say, summer of 1993.

sad, but I think it is true for the most.

I once had to watch a whole series of 'Later' back to back, which produced only one stand out performance, and that was from the beautiful Mazzy Star, god bless her. And

Bumpety bump bump

Yeeeeessss Gogol Bordello on tonight!!! :D

Full line up The Automatic, Dixie Chicks, Gogol Bordello, The Fratellis, Dresden Dols and Nutini

Purple pants are on in honour (not an altogether pretty sight, granted. But on, none-the-less):o

can anyone of the cunning intellectually piercing persusion understand why this series of jools has been so naff? Has it always been this way? I remember Radiohead and Asian Dub Foundation being on the same show once! Maybe it's just that all the bands are away playing festies. but then again, surely that means even MORE of them should be in England cos all the big festivals are here. What is going on Jools? Answer thyself!

Tonight is also the first outing for Transmission - c4's attempt to steal away some of bbc2's yoof audience.

Featuring Dirty Pretty Things, the Kooks, Lily Allen and the Klaxons.

Which have got to be better than fucking Keane who are also on Later tonight (madamv left them out :p )

I know what I'm gonna be watching

BBC2's website says Keane aren't on so it's no contest IMO, the Dresden Dolls are original, fantastic and hardly ever on the TV whereas over on 4 it's a case of another week, another load of unimaginative, deriative shite sponsored by a mobile phone company featuring Dirty Pretty Things (better than Babyshambles but that's hardly an achievement) and the Kooks who are the dullest load of crap the NME have shat out on ages.
Different week, same shit, different sponsor!

pissed off i missed this - i even like the current singles by The Fratellis and The Automatic. :(

is it repeated?

I just don't get the Fratellis at all. I'd rather listen to Babyshambles.

I don't actually like them with any passion, it's just when Henrietta comes on Xfm I like it a bit more than most of the records either side. It's a very non-commital kind of enthusiasm :)

Ner ner ner ner ner ner trashpony. See? I DO know what I am talking about :p

And Dub, yes I do believe it is repeated.... I just went to find out when, but my browser isnt opening the bbc site properly, so cant tell you. When hub returns from shop, he will prob know.

It was a cracking show. Dresden Dolls were ace, Paolo Nutini was good too and of course Gogol Bordello put on a show. Didn't impress anyone I was with though which annoyed me slightly as I felt a twonk 'yeah-ing' round their room. Oh where oh where was my Sparklefish when I needed her? (on the lash in town forsaken me:( )

It was a cracking show. I was in the audience standing behind Jo Brand (wearing my coat and sweating because no-one told me you can't wear white!). When i watched it last night I was waiting for the bit where i spoke to Jools during Jo B's interview but they'd cut it out along with most of her interview :(

Gogol Bordello and the Dresden Dolls were ace

I was really please that Keane weren't on....

Serves me right for trusting the bloody Observer to get a line-up right
