Tomato cores - who eats these??

how is it green? the 'spider' bit on top is green. the bit inside is pale pink. and tastes like tomato.

No! no! no! Except even if it did I wouldn't know because I find it impossible to get past the tree branch texture.

Does it not taste like a stalk to you? A tad woody.. but really green...it's just like chewing a thin branch. My problem is probably with the texture rather than the taste- chewy stringy tree branch just doesn't do it for me.

What kind of nutter defends eating the tomato core?

I always take the fibrous white core out of the middle and get proper irritated if it's left in food I have to eat. It's crappy, flavourless, and has a lame texture.
I thought everyone but lazy mass-processors thereof did the same

are you sure youre eating tomatoes and not erm trees? or sticks or something?

Well that's what I'm left wondering.

It does seem a tad far fetched to think that every sandwich bar has conspired against me and inserted branches into their tomatoes.

Although people here claim it's all good :hmm:

Would you eat a plate full of tomato cores??? Bet ya wouldn't.

Tomoato cores are nice, barely noticable in a sandwich or whatever.

People who eat pear cores however should be shot.

Which bit do you mean exactly SOS?

The green stalky bit outside the tomato?

The green bit inside the tomato under the stalky bit?

The whole middle bit?

The whole inside including (yummy) pips?

ETA HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO ANSWER THIS PLEASE :)

Define core

he/she means the tough stringy greeny-white bit inside the tomato under the green stalky-leafy bit on top which you only get on big tomatoes. I don't like them either.

Thankyou for explaining beautifully the bit I'm talking about!
:)

I don't like them much, but I will eat them if they are soft enough.

Not mega keen on raw tomato anyway.

All I can say is the tomatoes you are eating ARE NOT RIPE!

yes they are  just because you haven't experienced something doesn't mean it cannot exist y'know! Do a google for 'tomato core' and you'll get shitloads of results.

everything here is edible and tasty

If I'm arsed I core and seed tomatoes for cooking - it definitely makes sauces less bitter in particular. Same if I'm doing a salsa, where a little chunk of core is offputting compared to the sweet tomato cubes.

But in the vast majority of cases, tomato cores go in or are lazily thrown away.

People honestly get fussy about the cores in commercial kitchens. Trying to get them out whilst minimising wastage is one of those things people get obsessed about.

Look there are videos all over Google and cheffy books aplenty dealing with tomato coring techniques. No need for anyone to get snotty about the possibility that someone might mutilate a virgin tomato

You can even buy gadgets like this one specifically to core toms.
