As far as I know, he plays a Polish pilot.. so not inaccurate. Could be wrong though.

Horrible little freak. In his defence he stars in two of my favourite films but one of them would have better without him. In the other he is indispensible. They are, of course, The Last Samurai and Top Gun.

No, he plays Billy Fiske. Fiske was a real person, a US citizen and an interesting guy; born rich, became an Olympic champion at bobsleigh, stripped of his place in the 1936 US team for refusing to perform in the Nazi olympics of that year. He married an English aristocrat and joined the RAFs equivalent of the TA soon after the war broke out (he was already a qualified pilot).

He was strictly speaking breaking the law by doing so, but the RAF senior ranks contained many high-society friends and he got away with it. He was killed flying a Hurricane fighter at the height of the battle of britain, without having shot down (so far as is known) any Nazis.

He is burid in Westminster Abbey IIRC as a thank you from a grateful nation (I'd have preferred a gold clock and a stripper if it was me but there you go)

Good story, great bloke (and a shortarse so Cruise is admirably well cast) but just watch the Yanks change it to 'how we saved your ass and hey you'd better be Scientologists too you limey bastards'

I saw the "moving" War of the Worlds last night with another sterling performance by Hollywood's finest Tom Cruise.

As usual I felt an overwhelming desire to put my hands in the screen and strangle the little annoying man. However I wonder whether my dislike for Cruise is prejudicing my opinion of him as an actor.

So, as well as being a twat, is he a good actor? Or a load of wank? Poll coming up.
