Today's Daily Express...

Themmuns on the right are a bad lot, aren't they?
As far as I'm aware this thread was started to criticise one newspaper for one story. I'm afraid the edifice you're trying to create exists largely in your own imaginings.

Fucking hell, even lower than I thought.....

A better story might be as to why the police as so incompetent that 99% of the people they arrest on suspicions of terrorism are released and about 90% of the few they do charge are found not guilty....

As far as I could gather the other 20 were pending trial, rather than not guilty.

Even if that is the case, it still shows that out of the 1000s arrested only 23 have been charged.....if that's not a policy of "round 'em up" I don't know what is.....

I said "underlying assumption" because it seems to me no-one's saying it out loud. Feel free to prove me wrong. I just see a lack of politics in threads like this.

I was less concerned with the victimising asylum seekers element (which is par for the course as far as the Express) and more the utter contempt displayed for innocent until proven guilty. It's a complete non-story. Not one person convicted of a terrorist offence in this country has been through the asylum system.

Er If a huge % of asylum seekers were being rounded up, you might have a point.
But at the moment it just looks like your talking out of WPs collective arse.

also, AFAIK the Daily Express' slide further and further into swivel-eyed asylum-obsessed bollocks has actually cost them readers.

tbaldwin thousands of people have been arrested under the terrorist acts in the last year or two. Three have been found guility and according to sorry none of them were asylum seekers. That pretty much is a round 'em up policy and shows the total incompetence of the police and that the Daily Express is printing even more shit than usual.

But as the Daily Express owner backs new labour I expect you're a bit touchy about the whole thing.....

Can't help but wonder how many people at various stages in the asylum process end up modelling in some of Desmond's other publications.

You'd think he'd be all for the status quo, really.

About as responsible as Mike Mcc's posting.

Yyyyaaaawwwwnnnn!

Nowhere did I suggest that 'all asylum seekers arre bombers', I did mention that a disproportionate number of those responsible (or accused, as I was corrected) were the sons of asylum seekers. Nor did I suggest that we should stop genuine asylum seekers just because the progeny might become law breakers.

Last week a family of refugees who had applied for asylum were forced out of their home in Richmond Hill, Leeds after a series of violent attacks.
The area also got the highest vote for the BNP in Leeds in the 2001 election.

Deliberate shit stirring like the Express article serves to give bigots a spurious justification for ethnic clensing.

Id like to string up the nasty little hack repsinsible for this poisonous article. Imagine how it feels to be a refugee when virtually every day, on every single fucking newstand, there are headlines refering to you as some sort of disease or plague or subhuman filth.

I spent 3 years in working in refugee housing and had to deal on a regular basis with the end result of this media led hate campaign. Shit like this makes me want to kill.

So what exactly was your point? Neither article mentioned anything about the children of asylum seekers - so you brought it up; only to inform us that it was of no significance?

I'm very sorry that I seem to have upset you by trying to be marginally more factual than the Express! ;)

Is that right CR? I thought the express had gone back to supporting the Tories?

Did'nt Max (son of Oswald) Mosely give money to the Labour Party? Or was that Bernie "Let Me Display My Fag Signs For Another 4 Years" Ecclestone?

I know Ecclestone did, but they had to give it back because of the whole "convenient donation/favourable legislation/probable corruption" thing.

Lord Sainsbury, CEO of J. Sainsbury PLC has given them £ 7 million over the past 8 years - and look where it got him!*

*head of the food standards commission - and appointing 4 of his company's directors to "advisory" roles....

And lest we forget - Peter Mandelson and his fine socialist "money for quick passports for corrupt Indian businessmen" ways....

So is "Express runs reactionary drivel". You might as well have a thread about "Star covers Big Brother".

And the thread ends up about New Labour taking donations from dodgy businessmen. Which has never been discussed before.

There can be excellent discussion on these boards when people switch off the autopilot.

Look on the bright side - in about 10 years 50% of the current readership of the Express will be pushing daisies and it's only read by old reactionary cunts who already believe that anything that even smells of foreign is suspect and should be arrested

Daily Mail readers then basically....

Hmmm...hasn't actually helped Sainsbury's sales out, or prevented Tesco from continuing to dominate multiple retilaing in the UK has it? FSC is introducing tougher food safety guidelines then exist now.

Does he get paid for this role as well?

Yep - Private Eye did an expose on it a couple of years ago. I think he does get paid from what I read in there but don't quote me on that. I think the main dirt digged up on that appointment was about New Labour and GM foods and how they were trying to push the "ITS SAFE" argument by appointing Sainsbury....
